Senior Center Department and Statistics Report 16 of 20 Senior Center REPORT February 7, 2019 GENERAL Facility and Computer Lab Update The Senior Center has been restored from the flooding with new flooring and wall repairs. The Carlsbad IT team is working with a contractor to install the necessary networking equipment to connect computers. Once done, the desktop group will install PC’s and monitor arms in the new Computer Lab. Ideally, the Computer Lab should be reopened in the new location at the end of February, early March. Senior Center Upgrades ▪ Former computer lab being repurposed as an Activity Room to host classes, programs, and currently the AARP Free Tax Preparation Services. These services will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the tax season. ▪ New room and directional signs to be upgraded throughout the center. ▪ Fitness Center equipment assessment with a member meeting and survey to determine how to best meet the health services of members. Marketing ▪ Starting in March, the new Seaside Insider Senior Newsletter will expand to include the monthly menu while providing more space and the ability to add a section, the “Senior Commission Corner” which will include announcements, highlights and invitations. The meeting move to city hall is an example of the perfect announcement and invitation for seniors to attend. Monthly health highlights, instructor spotlights, staff profiles, transportation and home meal delivery information will all be included to enhance communication with the senior community. ▪ Staff have been trained on the online Canva design program to create Carlsbad branded materials for display and promotions of Senior programs and events. ▪ New photography is being captured of current activities and a videographer will also be scheduled to highlight the Senior Prom and a variety of senior programs and events to create an informational video about the center for online and center display. Transportation The Senior Center buses are scheduled for replacement with the smaller bus being purchased this fiscal year and the larger bus after July 1, 2019. Transportation is a vital service and highly utilized for visits to the center, weekly shopping, and medical appointments. Drivers are caring, kind, and supportive of their passengers. Technology Tech Talk with Teens wrapped up in January enhancing smart phone and ipad skills for Seniors to build on. February continues with more technology classes to include digital photo, iPad, and scanning classes to include Photoshop Elements, Scanning Photos, Cloud Storage, and Managing Your Passwords. Volunteer instructor Mike McMahon is a valued resource and his technology classes attracted 175 students last month alone. 17 of 20 Senior Center hosts HomeShare Program HomeShare is a roommate matching service that has been supporting San Diego seniors for over 25 years. HomeShare connects individuals who want to share their homes with those looking for alternative housing options. Carlsbad Senior Center is excited to host and offer this free program on Mondays 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m. – noon. For more information: :http://www.carlsbadca.gov/services/depts/housing/programs/homeshare.asp New Senior Classes at Pine Due to the Senior Center space limitations during primetime hours, classes will be expanding across the way to the Pine Avenue Community Center. Introduction to drawing and technology classes will be held in the Pine Activity Room when available. Upcoming Events • Thursday, February 14, Love YOUR Heart free blood pressure screening event at the Senior Center. Love Your Heart is an annual, county-wide event that provides free blood pressure screenings with the goal to activate people to “know their numbers” and take charge of their own heart health. Last year there were 36,000 blood pressure screenings. In collaboration with Live Well San Diego the center will host a nurse to • Thursday, February 14, Romance with Books event in the dining hall. The “Romance with Books” event on Valentine’s Day will celebrate the joy of romance novels and promote reading to stimulate the brain. The Carlsbad Library “Books To Go” mobile library bicycle will attend with a variety of books selections for customers to enjoy. • Thursday, March 7, 1 – 3 p.m. the Senior Prom returns with a 50’s “Greased Lightning” theme for a spinning afternoon with Seniors and Sage Creek High School students. Valerie Nguyen is the event planner and has original ideas such as showcasing fifties prom photos and more. • Wednesday, March 13, 1 – 2:30 p.m. Intergenerational Council San Diego North County bi- monthly meeting will be hosted in Carlsbad at the Pine Avenue Community Center. Intergenerational programming success stories and ideas will be shared and showcased.
