Senior Center Department and Statistics Report 9 of 14 SENIOR COMMISSION ` Senior Center REPORT September 5, 2019 GENERAL Age-Inclusive New Team Member for Intergenerational Programs Jennifer Burros, Recreation Specialist, was brought on board to focus on intergenerational and age- inclusive programs for the Senior Center and Pine Avenue Community Center to further integrate these age groups to enrich the lives of both youth and older adults. Program implementation has already begun with the Jefferson Elementary School Make A Wish letter campaign, Paper Rocket Project, Verbatim Theater and Grandfriends Kindness Project. Paper Rocket Project On Tuesday, August 13th, Carlsbad summer camp participants, seniors and their families witnessed the first paper rocket launch at the Pine Avenue Community Center. The intergenerational project, organized by former Council Member Dr. Mark Packard, delivered summer fun for all ages. Dr. Packard brought his ideas, energy and homemade rocket launcher to help lead this exciting science, technology, engineering and math activity. Seniors and children alike were amazed as they watched their paper rockets built from scratch soar almost 300 feet into the air. The project was such a success that it will be returning in January as part of the Kids for Peace Grandfriends Kindness Project. Grandfriends Kindness Project This new project is offered by Kids for Peace, funded by the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation and hosted by the City of Carlsbad at the Senior Center. The project is all about giving and receiving kindness. The first Thursday of each month intergenerational pairs will team up to complete kind acts. September 5th learn about succulents and complete a garden craft with the theme “Planting A Friendship”. Verbatim Documentary Theater Another unique Sage Creek High School Genius Project was introduced to the Senior Center this month and will feature a “Verbatim” theater program where Seniors will be interviewed by the Sage Creek High School students who will take the interviews and develop “scripts” of their stories, then recreate their characters in a play. Performances will take place at the Senior Center and the New Village Arts Theater. Beyond this genius project, New Village Arts Theater also received a grant also received a grant from the Carlsbad Foundation that will offer this opportunity in all Carlsbad high schools. Student Volunteers Staff are collaborating with Carlsbad and Sage Creek High School to recruit volunteers for ongoing programs Senior/intergenerational programs such as Tech Talk and the Senior Prom while developing new ones. There is a new student at Sage Creek who is developing SageConnect to add games, tournaments, and Improve Comedy to the Senior Center. 10 of 14 C cityof Carlsbad Par_ks & Recreation Social Dance Evening Hours New evening class for all adults, a spin-off of the class at the Senior Center will continue into the fall season. Social dance teaches basic and intermediate patterns of West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, Night Club Two Step, Cha Cha, Waltz and other ballroom dances. Social dancing has been shown to enhance brain function, covering three main areas of Alzheimer’s prevention which include exercise, social engagement and cognitive activity. Health and Wellness Healthy Living Series The Senior Center highlights health and wellness each month in the newsletter and in programming. Classes are free and designed to help customers make positive, lasting changes in their lives. Better health begins with each person. • June Topics: Healthy Living to Prevent Chronic Disease, Mindful Eating, Physical Activity, Stress Management & Motivation • July Topics: Don’t Get Swindled Seminar and Sun Protection Awareness • August Topics: The Five Pillars to Strong Bones Senior Center Fitness Room The re-opening of the fitness center took place on June 27th to include tours, free fitness trainings, and introduction to Senior Center customers on membership and opportunity grants for those who can’t afford membership. The video coverage was featured on the website www.carlsbadca.gov/seniors and on youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QQRmDcGdbs&feature=youtu.be Since the refurbishment there have been over 300 more visits and monthly memberships almost doubled, 28 to 56 monthly members with a total of 5,568 visits Education Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego is an educational program for adults over the age of 50 who want to be a part of a learning community. With topics such as medicine, law, international relations, and arts there are classes for every interest. Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 25, there will be monthly morning classes offered at the Carlsbad Senior Center for patrons to learn these recorded lectures and discussion groups. The foundation developed a report of San Diego County’s senior centers and identified areas for growth with the growing senior demographic. The report is available online, but the Age-Friendly Initiative will be far more comprehensive for a need’s assessment in Carlsbad. Transportation Transportation staff have been developing an outreach campaign to Carlsbad senior living communities to make them aware of the transportation services available and the services to include, an increate in ridership demonstrates their efforts. The first of a monthly series program for youth and seniors to collaborate on kindness projects throughout the school year. • Friday, September 6, 5 p.m. Leo Carrillo Ranch: The popular Leo Carrillo Film Festival features classic films “The Great Train Robbery” and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”. Grounds open at 5 p.m. and movie starts at sunset. Free admission by reservation only. • Wednesday, September 25, 10 – 11:30 a.m. Senior Center Auditorium: UCSD Ocher Lifelong Learning session with Art History Lecturer Linda Blair reviewing French Impressionists. • Wednesday, October 30, 4 p.m. Senior Center Auditorium: Sage Creek Genius Verbatim Project will perform the stories of seniors shared in their August 26th interviews.
