Senior Center Department and Statistics Report 30 of 34 SENIOR COMMISSION ` Senior Center REPORT October 3, 2019 GENERAL Age-Inclusive Grandfriends Kindness Project Offered by Kids for Peace and funded by the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation and hosted by the City of Carlsbad at the Senior Center. The project is all about giving and receiving kindness. The first Thursday of each month intergenerational pairs will team up to complete kind acts. September 5th Seniors and youth “Planted A Friendship” with succulents in kind designed pots. The plants were delivered to home meal recipients and used for decoration in the dining hall in the month of September and later raffled off. October 3rd will celebrate National Book Month with youth and Seniors making bookmarks and sharing stories and donating books to the Kids for Peace Club. Walking Wednesdays Walking Wednesdays will begin on Wednesday, October 9th to motivate customers to get moving. Being active is the secret to staying healthy and walking is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to get moving. Moving toward better health & fitness walking Wednesdays will provide fun and while making new friends. Participants will meet at Pine Avenue Community Center. Friends and family welcome! New Social Dance Class and Monthly Dance Party New evening class for all adults, a spin-off of the class at the Senior Center will continue into the fall season. Social dance teaches basic and intermediate patterns of West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, Night Club Two Step, Cha Cha, Waltz and other ballroom dances. Social dancing has been shown to enhance brain function, covering three main areas of Alzheimer’s prevention which include exercise, social engagement and cognitive activity. The new class will introduce monthly evening dance parties! Health and Wellness Healthy Living Series • Diabetes Prevention Program Information Sessions with the Skinny Gene Project was held on Tuesdays, September 10 & 17th. The program will start in October and will guide participants with prediabetes to learn healthy eating and exercise habits. • Special Needs Planning... providing a lifetime of care for your child living with special needs. Workshop to learn about special needs planning, and the peace of mind it provides to families. Attendees received information packets to take home. Topics covered included legal planning, government benefit coordination, budget and lifestyle planning. • Sleep Deprivation, Insomnia and Solutions! Sleep Deprivation is known as insufficient sleep or sleeplessness. It is a condition of not getting enough sleep. It can be either chronic or acute and may vary widely in severity. This can cause fatigue, daytime sleepiness, clumsiness, and increased appetite leading to weight gain. It adversely affects the brain and cognitive function. Sleep deprivation is the single most dangerous aspect of sleep disorder. This can compromise you 31 of 34 C cityof Carlsbad Par_ks & Recreation physically and emotionally. Come join Dr. Gestring, the North County Wellness Champion Doctor, as he presents to you why your sleep is important. • CVS Flu Shot Clinic Licensed CVS Immunizing Pharmacists administered the 2019 “All-in-one Influenza Vaccine” (Influenza A, Influenza B & H1N1). Customers brought their Medicare Part B card and CVS will take care of billing Medicare for you. No appointment necessary. • Fall prevention program reviewed preventable steps to strengthen older adults to avoid falling and demonstrating they are not an inevitable part of aging. Prevention includes regular exercise and preventative care. Education Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego is an educational program for adults over the age of 50 who want to be a part of a learning community. With topics such as medicine, law, international relations, and arts there are classes for every interest. The first session was on Wednesday, Sept. 25th with 26 students. The October topic will be the Architecture of the Silk Road: Hindu Architecture of India. Collaborations The Senior Center is collaborating with the Library and Cultural Arts Department to promote programs and shared resources to Active Adults 50+ which include information at the Dove Library “Life Your Best Life” series and hosting Cultural Arts visiting artist Ken Waldman as a host speaker at the Senior Center. Upcoming Events • Thursday, October 3, 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Senior Center Dining Room: Grandfriends Kindness Project, “What’s Your Story”. The first of a monthly series program for youth and seniors to collaborate on kindness projects throughout the school year. • Wednesday, October 9, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Senior Center Auditorium: Visiting artist from Alaska, Ken Waldman’s presentation and performance is like taking a cruise to Alaska without having to leave Carlsbad! • Thursday, October 24, 7-9 p.m, Pine Avenue Community Center: 1st annual Monster Bash Dance Party! The Pine Avenue Community Center will transform into a wicked wonderland, drawing a costumed crowd of dancers from all over San Diego county! With live music from the band, Alias, dancers will compete for best costume and enjoy dancing the night away with a snack bar, play zone and lounge. Don’t miss this opportunity to be the most creative creepy dancer in Carlsbad!
