Senior Center Department and Statistics Report 10 of 14 SENIOR COMMISSION ` Senior Center REPORT November 7, 2019 GENERAL Age-Inclusive Grandfriends Kindness Project Offered by Kids for Peace, funded by the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation and hosted by the City of Carlsbad at the Senior Center, the Grandfriends Kindness Project continues to unite seniors and youth to share and express kindness together. October celebrated National Book Month with youth and Seniors making bookmarks and sharing stories and donating books to the Kids for Peace Club. November Grandfriends will create gratitude jars, write “Thank Yous” to Veterans, and learn to say, "thank you" in new languages. Monthly Dance Party with Free Social Dance Lesson October offered a new evening dance in a new venue, the Pine Avenue Community Center gym. The dance was after the social dance class and a free dance lesson is included with the price of the party. Costumed dancers enjoyed the evening with winners in the categories of funniest costume, most creative and spookiest. The next dance is scheduled for Thursday, November 21st 7-9 p.m. with a Friendsgiving Theme. Walking Wednesdays Walking Wednesdays launched on October 9th and already has 14 walkers in the club. Walks have been over 2 miles and have covered the Carlsbad Sea Wall to the Village. The goal is to motivate customers to get moving while connecting and making new friends motivated to stay active. All ages and species welcome, dogs and strollers and Your Life, Your Story On Wednesday October 30th Sage Creek High School students performed the life stories of six Carlsabd seniors for a Verbatim Genius Project. The performance was powerful, poignant and impactful. All in attendance, young and old, thoroughly savored the special show. Intergenerational Ping Pong Tournament On Friday, November 1st, seniors and teens collaborated to compete in a doubles ping pong tournament. One ping pong loving senior was paired up with one of the L.I.T.E. program participants to compete for a chance to win the 1st place title. Fun and laughter was had by all during this exhilarating experience. Seniors were able to provide their wisdom and ping pong skills with the younger players, while proving that ping-pong is a sport for all ages! Health and Wellness Healthy Living Series • The ABC’s & Part D of Medicare 2020 - Educational workshop to help customers better understand Medicare, plan options and how to sort through the confusing pieces and parts of Medicare. 11 of 14 C cityof Carlsbad Par_ks & Recreation Customers learned the changes coming in 2020 to ensure they are on the right plan to get the most benefit for your Medicare dollar • Aging in Place: Hoarding Disorder – Characteristics and Treatment – Party of the monthly successful aging in place series, which offers insights from professionals who share their expertise concerning specific aspects of how to age in place successfully. • Dealing with Difficult People – Workshop identified tactics difficult people use to manipulate, intimidate or gain control. Assisted with how to deal with these tactics in clear, easy to understand strategies. Education Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego Carlsbad Senior Center is now hosting courses from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego. With topics such as medicine, law, international relations, and arts there are classes for every interest. The September, October and November classes have been art focused. Collaborations The Senior Center is collaborating with the Library and Cultural Arts Department to continue promote programs and shared resources for Active Adults 50+ which included information at the Dove Library “Life Your Best Life” series. November will be focused on Cole Library. The first of a monthly series program for youth and seniors to collaborate on kindness projects throughout the school year. • Thursday, November 7, 10:30 – 1 p.m. Senior Center Auditorium: Visiting artist from Alaska, Ken Waldman’s presentation and performance is like taking a cruise to Alaska without having to leave Carlsbad! • Friday, Novembr 8, 12 p.m. Viper Marine Squadron will be joining the dining hall lunch in recognition of Veteran’s Day. • Thursday, November 21, 7-9 p.m, Pine Avenue Community Center: Friendsgiving Dance Party.
