Subject: Bicycle detection at signalized intersections

Executive Summary
The Traffic Safety Commission commented about the ability of traffic signals to adequately detect
bicycles at signalized intersections. Staff proposed to make a presentation illustrating how video
cameras are used at most signalized intersections in Carlsbad to detect bicycles waiting to get
served by a green light.
Background
At the May 7 meeting of the Traffic Safety Commission, inquiries were made regarding how
traffic signal equipment detects bicycles waiting to get a green light at intersections. Staff will
make a brief demonstration showing how the equipment works including the ability to monitor
activity from the Traffic Management Center (TMC). This item is intended to be informational
only.
