Absent - Commissioners Straub and Jersey Staff Members Present: Connie Beardsley, Manager, Arts Office APPROVAL OF MINUTES Minutes of the Meeting held July 13, and August 11, 1989, were approved as presented. MANAGER'S REPORT - Connie Beardsley Ms. Beardsley mentioned that the Pops Concert had gone well and that there seemed to be more in attendance than in previous years. She mentioned that a notice was put in the newspaper concerning the Public Art Committee and six people called to say they would be interested in serving on that Committee. Ms. Beardsley also distributed some information regarding the Cultural Facilities Committee and the appointments the Mayor made at the previous Tuesday night Council meeting. She then discussed the breakfasts. She talked to Bob McNulty, the Director of Partners for Livable Places. He is interested in coming to speak at one of the breakfasts and it would cost $1,000 to bring him but that would be covered by the Fieldstone grant. Joe Bear suggested that perhaps we could ask Larry Churchill or Janie Phillips to speak at one of the breakfasts concerning why Pacific Telesis supports the arts and build it around the Pacific Telesis, Affiliate Artist that is coming the end of November. The Commission felt this was a good idea as well. Joe Bear said he would discuss these ideas at the next CEEC meeting and would get together with Connie Beardsley after the meeting to report on that discussion. Connie Beardsley then mentioned the proposed gallery that will go in the new Library and she mentioned that Steve Densham has approximately 500 square feet that he is willing to let the Arts Commission/Arts Associates use as a temporary art gallery, if the Arts Commission is interested. Densham will donate this space until the space is MINUTES PAGE TWO COMMISSIONERS rented. Connie Beardsley asked for an indication of interest from the Commission for her to pursue such a gallery. She said she would also discuss it with the Arts Associates because at this point there was not money budgeted and she did not have the staff to direct such a gallery. However, if the Arts Associates were interested in providing volunteer time, she felt it may be a good opportunity to explore the use of the gallery on a very small scale. The Arts Commission expressed unanimous interest. COMMITTEE REPORTS Sue Ladouceur mentioned that the Kiosk Committee would meet on Monday, September 11, and that there had been some concerns about Nan Robertson's first presentation. They will be discussing them to give Nan an opportunity to rework her proposal. Connie Beardsley mentioned that the Artist's Showcase will take place on October 18 at El Camino High School in Oceanside. It could not be held in Carlsbad because there is no facility that could be obtained to hold such a showcase. The Cultural Arts Center is being renovated and was not available. There will be approximately 20 artists showcased. Teachers, principals, PTA representatives, Librarians, and senior citizen coordinators have been invited to see the artists that they may then book if they wish. These artists were screened by a professional panel and are all quality artists. Jackie Wrench then presented a report from the Arts Associates. She said their big fundraising event will be held on November 11 in conjunction with the grand opening of the Village Fair. It will be called Artists Fan- Faire. It will be $25 per person for tickets. Connie Beardsley mentioned that although she had not received formal notification, it appeared that Carlsbad would receive the National Endowment for the Arts Planning Grant for $30,000. This was to help fund the Long Range Plan and to be matched with the new dollars appropriated by City Council to the Arts Office this year. The request for proposal for the consultant was discussed. ADJOURNMENT By proper motion, the Meeting of September 7, 1989, was adjourned at 4:50 p.m. Respectfully submitted, CONNIE BEARDSLEY Manager, Arts Office
