Support for Arts Commission and Arts Office •/ 2. Galvanize community around the arts 3. Educate community (children/adults) about the arts 4. Provide monetary support 5. Involve other organizations in the arts program 6. Develop/support art projects and events 7. Ensure a comprehensive commitment to performing, visual and literary arts Responsibilities 1. Attend meetings (C.A.A.) and events 2. Be an active member of the board, i.e. be a worker 3. Develop committees and broad-based support 4. Stay informed re: current happenings, issues, artists (locally & nationally) 5. Be an advocate and a spokesperson S 6. Reflect the cultural diversity of the city through the arts 7. Maintain an open, working relationship with the Arts Commission How the Arts Commission Sees The Arts Associates Roles and Responsibilities/Arts Associates / Increase public awareness and support for community arts o "Friends of the Arts" (Library model) o Not independent entity Raison d'etre is Arts Office o Arts Associates projects do not pass through Commission Commission projects have depended on Arts Associates funding, people, etc. / Symbiotic relationship, not master/servant o Greater flow of ideas between two desirable / Commission rep at Arts Associates meetings desirable, but difficult at present Arts Associates is venue for interested people to develop involvement Flow of updated info •» -& How Arts Commission Sees Itself Roles and Responsibilities Role / Advise and recommend to City Council Help set policy Define public art sites Extended resources for Arts Office Oversee and orchestrate arts projects City Council - funding advocacy Liaison for arts in community Nurturing community cultural life Facilitate culture's development in community Development of future arts projects / Commission as Source Initiation Implementation Advise Arts Office Extension of government body, part of political process Umbrella organization for arts-oriented activities and groups Includes education, media / Do people expect things of us that are not our role? / Are we a fund-raising group? Connected to nationwide local arts movement and growth of community arts in San Diego County What we are not Fund-raising - not primary, but may make $$ in pursuit of other purpose (Stan's Fair) / Not independent body - especially regarding decision making Responsibilities Show up at meetings "Homework" done S Get public input into process Represent public interest, not personal interest / Deploy grants responsibly: Fiduciary Stewardship Use subcommittee structure to research Encourage Quality / Keep Council informed Raise level of Council Members arts appreciation / Be representative of people of Carlsbad - different groups, etc. / Responsibility to encourage change for the common good How Arts Associates See Arts Commission Roles/Responsibilities Roles 1. Advisory to the Council / 2. Seeking and communicating input from the public 3. Providing leadership (development, marketing) / 4. Ensure excellent management of the City arts program 5. Policy making 6. Stimulate interest and appreciation of the arts 7. Creating a climate which encourages artistic development 8. Develop short and long range plans Responsibilities S 1. Advocacy (lobby) to Council and community in the City of Carlsbad with regard to the arts program 2. Provide leadership training / 3. Provide adequate resources 4. Attend meetings and events / 5. Well informed on arts issues, local and national 6. Reflect the cultural diversity of the city through the arts 7. Support art education through the schools / 8. Maintain a high quality Arts Commission through recruitment and training 9. Maintain an open, working relationship with C.A.A.
