HomeMy WebLinkAbout1993-06-03; Arts Commission; MinutesMEETING OF: DATE OF MEETING: TIME OF MEETING: PLACE OF MEETING: MINUTES ARTS COMMISSION JUNE 3, 1993 4:00 PM CITY COUNCIL CONFERENCE ROOM CALL TO ORDER: Chairperson Ladouceur call the Meeting to order at 4:15 p.m. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Ladouceur, Spencer, Wood, Platner, Batter Absent:Commissioners Wrench and Portera APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Commissioner Wood stated the approval of the minutes of April 1, 1993 should have listed Commissioners Platner, Spencer and Wrench as abstaining instead of voting no. On motion by Commissioner Wood, the minutes of May 20, 1993 were approved as corrected. AYES:Spencer, Platner, Wood, Ladouceur, Batter COMMITTEE REPORTS: Chair's Report Commissioner Ladouceur reported that she had seen the Carlsbad High School production of Fiddler on the Roof and the PATH production of Lovers and Other Strangers. (Both Arts Office 1993 Community Arts Grant recipients.) Commissioner Ladouceur reminded the Commissioners of the Gallery Vista Summer Pops fund-raiser on June 26, from 5:30-8:30 pm. Mrs. Ladouceur also reminded Commissioners to sign up to assist staff at the jazz concerts at the Arts Info, table. Manager's Report Connie Beardsley stated that the Arts Office was assisting with the box office at the Classics Unlimited concert taking place at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center on June 13. She asked a commissioner to volunteer to help out with the box office. The Arts Associates have arranged a pre-concert dinner at Tutta Arts Commission Minutes - June 3, 1993 2 Pasta to generate interest in the concert. Cost for the dinner is $15. Igor Gruppman and others from Classics Unlimited will come and discuss the concert and play during the dinner. Mrs. Beardsley stated that fund-raising for the Pops concert remains a little over $17,000 received thus far. La Costa Hotel and Spa has offered to donate the thank-you reception for the major contributors. Mrs. Beardsley suggested the Commission hold the reception at the end of September. She also stated that the Carlsbad Convention and Visitors Bureau donated publicity funding for the Pops concert. Mrs. Beardsley gave a letter to the Commissioners asking for help in selling tickets for the Gallery Vista fund-raiser. She stated the Arts Associates Board has also been asked to help out. All funds raised from this effort .benefit the Pops concert. Mrs. Beardsley stated that she has been working with a group that has been trying to create a North County Public Art Brochure. The North County Tourism Marketing Group initially agreed to fund the entire project; however, it now feels it does not have sufficient funds, but has agreed to put $2500 towards the brochure. The cost to produce the brochure is approximately $4,000. Mrs. Beardsley also explained to the Commission about volunteering at the Summer Pops Concert. She stated staff is developing the sign-up list and encouraged Commissioners to assist if possible. Mrs. Beardsley stated that she will return with a more complete list at the next commission meeting. She also asked if a Commissioner would be willing to take on the position of chairing the volunteers working with the Arts staff. Mrs. Beardsley informed the Commission that staff was contacting Rotary for its help. She further stated the Arts Associates was not interested in assisting a great deal in this area with the event. Mrs. Ladouceur suggested contacting the High School football team to assist. She also stated that the coaches needed to be contacted before school lets out in the next two weeks. David Spencer mentioned that a program of the High School benefits from the Carlsbad 5000 and asked if the Arts Office could utilize members of a program of the High School during the Pops Concert in such a way that they would benefit from contributing their time. Mrs. Beardsley responded that as of now the concert is still $7,000 short and she did not know if this could be arranged. Mrs. Beardsley stated she would contact Mrs. Ladouceur regarding contacting the High School football team. Arts Commission Minutes - June 3, 1993 Commissioner Batter asked for an update on the Split Pavilion issue before the State Assembly. Mrs. Beardsley stated that the vote went to the Judiciary Committee of the Assembly and it was a tie vote. Ms. Batter asked what had happened since then. Commissioner Wood and Mrs.J Beardsley stated that the issue was scheduled to go back to the Committee this month. Fund-Raising Commitee Report Mrs. Beardsley stated she already reported on this matter. Commissioner Platner stated she saw an idea for fund-raising in Santa Barbara recently in which 2x2 squares of sidewalk were sold for $10 for the children to design sidewalk chalk art. The artwork was judged and prizes awarded. Mrs. Ladouceur stated that this would be ideal for a wonderful, small festival or could be tied into another event as a fund-raiser. The idea was discussed and suggestions were made to look into this in the future. Arts Education Task Force Chair Ladouceur reported that the meeting took place on June 1. Discussion was held on a letter to the PTAs requesting representation of cultural chair persons on their board. The purpose of the letter was to establish three way communication between the Arts Education Task Force, the City of Carlsbad arts programming and the schools. Make*A*Circus was discussed as an opportunity for the PTAs to participate as a fund-raiser. Two schools have agreed to participate. The Arts Contest Survey is in its final stages and will be sent out to various corporations and non-profit groups that do sponsor arts contest. Mrs. Beardsley further explained that the purpose of the survey is to find out what is going on so the teachers can plan for contests, competitions, etc. The Task Force also discussed the issue of the School District establishing its own task force because it is mandated to have an arts curriculum in placement. This has not been accomplished this year, but it is hoped to be in existence next year. Discussion also ensued regarding a bi-monthly publication that would have dates of arts events for teachers and residents of programs and also specific and special interest articles that the schools might enjoy sharing with parents and teachers. The next meeting will take place in September. Arts Associates Report Arts Commission Minutes - June 3, 1993 4 President Norm Dolnick reported that the artwork, "Theresa, Kristi and Diane", recently purchased by the Arts Associates has been removed from the La Costa Plaza Paseo Real site. One of the pieces fell and was damaged and the other two were very loose and it was decided to remove all from exhibit. The shopping center is willing to have the artwork put back. The Arts Associates are exploring alternatives to restore the damaged piece with the Public Art Coordinator. If the damaged piece cannot be restored, the Associates Board will decide whether to display the other two pieces. The Annual Meeting is taking place at the Senior Center on June 21, with a play reading by Bunny Kacher and Stewart Blaine.
