HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-02-25; Arts Commission; MinutesArts Commission Workshop February 25, 1997 Arts Office Present: Commissioners Wood, Batter, Pynes, Chattier, Willis, Platner, Lignante Workshop began at 4:35. The Vision Commissioners discussed the difference between the vision in Commissioner Chartier's marketing plan and the goals as stated in the Arts Element. Commissioners decided the current goals and vision are acceptable. The discussion then centered around "Role Model". "Champions" - Supporters Commissioners decided to identify and seek out "Champions". Commissioner Willis asked if the Arts Office had a "product" to .interest people. It was decided that a "product" was needed first, which should be concrete and visible - a "hub". Products listed: Gallery Sculpture Garden Arts Office The "Product" It was determined that the first step to be taken is to review the Cultural Facilities specifications taking existing city buildings into consideration along with other opportunities. Examples included: Carlsbad Brewery Library City Hall Church on Carlsbad Village Dr. Commissioners volunteered: Laurie Batter George Willis Networking It was also decided that networking with the City Council should continue with Commissioner Wood in his role as Chair to take the lead with other Commissioners assisting as needed. It was stated that the Arts Commission should approach the Council with the majority point of view so as not to be divisive. Adopt Commission/Committee Commissioners expressed an interest in adopting another Commission/Committee. Staff will be responsible for the Library Board, Sister City Committee and Historic Preservation Commission. Commissioners will be responsible for the Planning Commission, Design Review Committee, School Board, Parks & Recreation Commission and Senior Commission. They will report back to the Commission on items relevant to the Arts. Commissioners volunteered: Design Review, Parks & Recreation Gene Chartier School Board, Historic Preservation Susan Pynes Planning Bill Lignante George Willis Seniors Arthur Wood Chamber of Commerce Bill Lignante Bus/ness Champions/Contacts Commissioner Wood inquired if some of the items on the list (eg. business involvement) should be the responsibility of the Arts Associates as this is a project this organization is undertaking. Mrs. Beardsley replied that the focus for the Arts Associates is to promote business membership in the Arts Associates organization, but this information can be also useful to the Arts Commission. Commissioner Chartier stated the Arts Associates were putting the business membership project on hold until September. The Commission again addressed the issue of business champions and private champions and how they are "tied into Carlsbad". It was that these champions needed to be identified. Commissioner volunteered: Bill Lignante Arts Education It was decided by the Commission that this was a justifiable product. Staff is responsible for contacting local colleges - they are used as a resource. Gemological Institute Identified to be used to promote the Arts Office Commissioner volunteered: Laurie Batter Communication Plan The Commission determined that a communication plan for Arts Office programs should be developed. Commissioner volunteered: Gene Chartier Develop Identifying Logo Staff will review and develop. Reactivate Speakers Bureau It was determined that a Commissioner would work with staff to develop this program. Commissioner volunteered: Susan Pynes Design Information Sheet The Commission decided that standardized information sheets need to be available on all programs and projects the Arts Office conducts. Commissioners volunteered: Laurie Batter Susan Pynes Information Rack at Train Station Staff will investigate putting Arts Office informational brochures at the train stations. Design Format For Reprints It was discussed that there needs to be a format for reprinting some of the Arts Office brochures. Commissioner volunteered: Gene Chartier The workshop adjourned at 6:03
