HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-03-02; Arts Commission; MinutesMinutes Arts Commission Meeting March 2, 2000 • 4:00 p.m. City Council Chambers Present: George Willis, Arthur Wood, Jim O'Meara, Susan Pynes, Gene Chartier, Bill Lignante The Meeting was called to order by Chair Arthur Wood at 4:00 P.M. There were no minutes for approval. New Business II. Jim O'Meara was appointed as the Arts Commission representative to the Arts Associates Board. III. Alan Kindle introduced the Carrillo Ranch presentation. Joan Kindle and Bonnie Dominguez presented two slide shows and the talk which is regularly given to students giving the background of Carrillo Ranch. Old Business IV. Sunset Serenades Jim O'Meara stated that he was still working on trying to find sponsors and will report back at the next meeting. There are other issues to deal with as well such as insurance and licensing. V. Amphitheatre Jim O'Meara reported that he would like it to come before City Council and asked staff to let him know if and when the Arts Commission request to place the Amphitheatre in the CIP would be processed. He would like to wait to speak at the City Council if it is on the agenda. He also reported that he is hearing much support in the community. There was no public comment. Committee Reports Chair Arthur Wood reported that the Sculpture Garden opening was a big success. He also mentioned that the NAMM opening was a wonderful function and that the museum will be an asset to Carlsbad. Chair Wood mentioned the Glass Show opening on March 10th and the jazz concert on March 19th The Arts Manager reported that the Arts Office budget has been submitted. The Arts Office has requested a part time position for the office and is asking for funds for a Cultural Plan. She has applied for the second year of the grant for arts education with the Encinitas School District. She also mentioned that we have received more gallery contributions. Ms. Beardsley reported that the golf course design team met and the artists will be working with the landscape architects on the placement and lighting of the artwork. Commissioner Willis reported that the committee met to discuss placing tile on benches at the bluff top walkway and would like to consider tile on the retaining wall as well. Chair Wood stated that Paul Hobson would be retained at the artist to work on public art integrated into the Carrillo Ranch project. At the meeting he attended, Mr. Hobson submitted some rough sketches of designs for the main gate and for enhancement to a pedestrian bridge. Mr. Wood showed the sketches to the Arts Commissioners. A contract for Mr. Hobson will go before the City Council for approval in the next few weeks. Susan Pynes announced that the Arts Education Steering committee was working on Music in the Schools Month, providing showcases in each elementary school to demonstrate what has been taught in the first year of music instruction. The meeting was adjourned at 5:50 P.M.
