HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-05-04; Arts Commission; MinutesMinutes Arts Commission May 4, 2000 • 4:00 p.m. • Carlsbad Council Chambers The meeting was called to order by Chair Arthur Wood at 4:03 P.M. Present: Gene Chartier, Felicia Shaw, George Willis, Bill Lignante, Arthur Wood Susan Pynes arrived at 4:10 P.M. Absent: Jim O'Meara Approval of Minutes The Minutes of the February 3 meeting were approved. The Minutes of the March 2 meeting were approved. The Report on Sunset Serenades was postponed due to Commissioner O"Meara's absence. New Business New Initiatives Grants Community Arts Coordinator Colleen Finnegan reported on the New Initiatives Grants proposals. There were 5 proposals submitted. 1. The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation in conjunction with the NRG Energy, Inc. and two local artists to create bronze cast sculptures of fish to be located on the west side of the lagoon (east of Carlsbad Blvd.) - requested $5,000 2. PicArt with the Boys and Girls Club to create a portable mural which would be exhibited in various locations throughout the community working with 30 children - requested $5,000 3. The Carlsbad High School to create a permanent mural with a mural artist - requested $5,000 4. Carlsbad - Oceanside Art League to coordinate a juried show about the lagoon and to host an opening reception with entertainment - requested $3,000 5. The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation to put on a "Film and Field Festival" - requested $5,000 Each Commissioner commented on all the proposals and identified questions they would like answered at the June I meeting. The Commission would like to know if any of the proposals could be completed for less money and if they could, what parts of the proposal would be cut. They wanted more information on how the mural at the Boys and Girls Club would be moved and wanted to know about ownership and exact location of the artwork proposed for the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Staff will research this and respond at the next meeting. Committee Reports Chair's Report Commission Chair Wood announced that the Glass Exhibit was a big success and thanked Commissioner Lignante for his help. Manager's Report The Arts Manager reminded the Commission of the upcoming events, May 13 is the DeLoss McGraw opening reception from 4:00 pm to 6:00pm, May 14 is the Mothers Day Celebration at Holiday Park from noon until 6:00 PM and on May 15 the Arts Associates will hold its annual meeting from 6:00 - 8:00 with a tour of the museum from 6:00 to 7:00. She mentioned that Arthur Wood had been working hard on the Jazz Program. Susan Pynes announced that Fillipo Floridia would like to come to the Arts Commission in June to present a proposal regarding sculpture in the City. Felicia Shaw asked if the Commission would be interested in the City of San Diego hosting a regional meeting . Commissioner Wood asked her to return with something in writing. The meeting was adjourned at 5:45 P.M.
