HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-05-03; Arts Commission; MinutesMINUTES Arts Commission May 3, 2001 • 4:00 p.m. • Carlsbad Council Chambers The meeting was called to order by Vice Chair Felicia Shaw at 4:05 p.m. Present: Commissioners Held, Shaw, Lignante, Willis Chair Pynes arrived at 4:10 Approval of Minutes: The Minutes of February 3, 2001 were unanimously approved. Old Business Cultural Plan Update Connie Beardsley gave the commission a report on the draft summaries by ArtsMarket, the consultant retained to assist with the development of the cultural plan, and also reviewed Arts Office survey results provided by the Social and Behavioral Research Institute at California State University, San Marcos. Vice Chair Shaw turned the meeting over to Chair Pynes. V 2001 Community Arts Grant Evaluations Community Arts Coordinator Colleen Finnegan reviewed with commissioners the process of evaluating the 2001 Community Arts Grants and discussed the most recent grantee performances attended by commissioners. Gallery Update Commissioner Lignante reported on the March 19, 2001 gallery committee meeting, during which, the primary discussion centered on storage issues with the following recommendations: using off-site storage building a storage area in the gallery providing an addition to the gallery office placing a storage shed just outside the gallery. The committee approved all the above recommendations. Mrs. Beardsley explained that city staff is working on these storage issues. Mr. Lignante further reported the new exhibition "By Nature's Design" opens May 12. Mrs. Beardsley announced the gallery has 85 volunteers. New Business Zone 19 Community Park Chair Pynes reported to the commission that artists Richard Keely and Anna O'Cain have been recommended to work with the design team to develop an artwork concept for the park. Mrs. Beardsley provided a slide presentation to the commission on the artists' past work. She stated the committee felt that the artists are sensitive to area and the sitefor which they will be designing the art. On motion by Vice Chair Shaw, the Arts Commission unanimously voted to approve and recommend to City Council approval of artists Richard Keely and Anna O'Cain to develop and install artwork for the Zone 19 Community Park. Public Comment No public comment was given. Committee Reports Chair's Report Chair Pynes reported the annual commission retreat was on hold until the cultural plan is completed. The acquisitions policy is still being developed. Jim O'Meara recently resigned from the Arts Commission. On June 7, a student art show, featuring the artworks developed by students from Mission Estancia and Aviara Oaks elementary schools will be exhibited in the Dove Library Complex courtyard. The artworks are a result of the arts education programming held in conjunction with gallery exhibitions. Manager's Report Connie Beardsley reported the Faraday Center artwork designed by Philipp Rittermann has been installed and a reception will be held in the near future. Staff has been meeting with the Public Works Center P, ublic Art Selection Committee. Six semi-finalists have been selected to be interviewed out of 44 applicants. The statue "Aphrodite" designed by T.J. Dixon and James Nelson has been renamed to "Contemplation." Arts Education Report Commissioner Shaw asked that staff remove her name from reporting on arts education. Chair Pynes reported the Community/School Arts Education Advisory Committee stressed the importance of CUSD having state-approved visual arts curricula. Representation has increased on this committee from the Encinitas and San Marcos school districts. Chair Pynes gave commissioners copies of comments made by parents that attended Hope Elementary School's music appreciation week. Arts Associates Report Gloria Busman announced that her term as President was ending. The annual Arts Associates meeting during which a new slate of officers is elected will be held at the Schulman Auditorium on May 12, before the artists reception at the gallery. Chair Pynes appointed Commission Lignante to represent the Commission on the Arts Associates Board. The Arts Commission adjourned the meeting at 5:15 p.m. to the Cultural Plan Meetings to be held at the Museum of Making Music on May 9, 2001.
