However, expectations in relation to attendance are not clearly spelled out in the Resource Guide. An Arts Commissioner may only be removed by the affirmative vote of three members of the City Council. There is no mechanism in place for the Arts Commissioners themselves to vote on dismissal. Thus, it is really a matter of conscience that an Arts Commissioner attends meetings and follows through on his/her committee assignments. Whether absences are excused or not is not really the issue. An Arts Commissioner has made a commitment, and if at some point that commitment - attending meetings regularly and following through on committee assignments - can not be fulfilled, then that Arts Commissioner should proactively offer to step down from the position. The basic premise to keep in mind is that if an Arts Commissioner misses meetings or assignments, the activities of the Arts Commission may be seriously hindered. In the event an Arts Commissioner misses a noticeable number of meetings or committee assignments, the Chair of the Commission will first talk with that member to emphasize the importance of attendance, or withdrawal. If absences continue, the Chair will send a note to the City Council informing them that the activities of the Commission may be hindered because of the inactivity of a certain member.
