HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-06-01; Arts Commission; MinutesMINUTES Carlsbad Arts Commission June 1,2006 Carlsbad Council Chambers Call to Order Commissioners Present: Gary Hill, Rita Francis, Frances Carrillo, Ron Juncal, Barbara Iserloth, DeForest Sherman Chair Hill called the Meeting to Order at 9:00 a.m. Minutes for Approval On motion by Commissioner Francis, the Arts Commission approved the revised April 6, 2006 Minutes. New Business Review of public comments and recommendation to City Council on public artwork proposal for Fire Station #6. Terry Smith, Senior Engineer, gave an overview of the Fire Station #6 project, including details about the process, the Conditional Use Permit (CUP) approved by the Planning Commission, and the interaction of the architect and the public artist. Mr. Smith handed out a set of drawings that contained various elevations of the proposed finished fire station building, and a panoramic aerial view of the fire station property. Arts Manager Peter Gordon gave a summary of the comments that were received by the public, noting that a total of 51 were received. Of that total, 35 (or 69%) were positive, 11 (or 21%) were negative, 5 (or 10%) were split, and 2 were not applicable. Christopher Lee, the artist, was not able to make the meeting. Both Mr. Gordon and Mr. Smith then responded to questions from the Arts Commissioners. On Motion by Commissioner Iserloth with a second by Commissioner DeForest, the Arts Commission recommended approval of the proposed artwork for Fire Station #6 to the City Council. The vote was 6-0. Commissioners Hill and Juncal then suggested to Mr. Smith that a bench or some type of seating should be considered for placement somewhere near the Fire Station along the public trail (Old Santa Fe Road) with an explanatory plaque about the artwork and with an educational brochure about "fire safety" for the public. Presentation of 2006 TGIF Jazz in the Parks concert schedule. Colleen Finnegan, Community Arts Coordinator, presented the 2006 TGIF Jazz in the Parks Series schedule and gave a summary of the type of bands and activities planned for this 21st season of the summer concert series. Public Comment There were no comments from the public. Commissioners' Report Commissioners reported on activities Peter Gordon, Arts Manager, distributed information regarding the upcoming Folk Life Day to be held on June 3, 2006 at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery. Mr. Gordon also introduced the new Administrative Secretary for the Cultural Arts Office, Isabelle Paulsen. Adjournment The Chairman adjourned the meeting at 10:13 a.m.
