Call to Order Chairman Gary Hill called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. Commissioners Present: Fran Carrillo, Heath Fox, Gary Hill, Ron Juncal, Barbara Iserloth, Rita Francis Commissioners Absent: Sherman DeForest II. Minutes for Approval On motion by Commissioner Iserloth, second by Commissioner Juncal, to approve the January 4, 2007, Minutes with the following correction: Page 3, paragraph 3, to read: "...the Commission that she had read in the newspaper that a group of coastal cities were getting together to participate in an art project to display about 40 statues to celebrate Garfield's 30th birthday. Commissioner Francis wondered why this type of subject didn't come before the Arts Commission." AYES: Commissioners Carrillo, Fox, Hill, Juncal, Iserloth and Francis ABSENT: Commissioner DeForest III. New Business B. 2007-08 City Council priorities for Citizen Connections and Communications Presentation and Discussion - Denise Vedder Denise Vedder, Communications Manager, gave an overview of her evolving role regarding communicating with citizens relating to the media, newsletters, and outreach programs and how all communication is in line with the City Council's goals and vision. City Connection is a program where Council and staff are out in the community to find out what is important to citizens. Staff follows problems in the neighborhoods and the community and gets citizens involved in the solving of those problems. Ms. Vedder informed the Commission that the recent citizens' survey showed that trust and confidence were rated high for City government in general. Ms. Vedder stated that the City is looking at future trends and specifically looking at technology for expanding connections to the citizens in the future. There will be streaming video of Council meetings soon. She told the Commission that February is the month when Council sets their priorities. Commissioner Juncal stated that the coming changes would bring opportunities for artists and more culture. He suggested that there could be interviews with the Sculpture Garden artists and public art pieces could be considered in Carlsbad. Joe Garuba, Senior Administrative Analyst, distributed the results of the recent 2006 Citywide Survey Results to Commissioners. A. Trek 2017 Futuring Conference Presentation - Mike Peterson Mike Peterson, Senior Building Inspector, SCT Chair, reviewed the history of the first two Futuring Conferences and informed the Commission that internationally known Futurist Ed Barlow, Regional Training Center, would be holding the fifth Futuring Session on Monday, February 12, 2007, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 1635 Faraday Avenue, Room 173. Mr. Peterson extended an invitation to the Commissioners to attend the session. IV. Public Comment There was no public comment. V. Committee Reports A. Commissioners' Report Commissioners reported on their respective committees. B. Manager's Report Peter Gordon, Arts Manager, informed the Commission that the opera programs, now called Opera Previews Plus, had started and are very popular. Family Open Studios would be held February 3, 2007, from 11am to 2pm; at the Dove Library. Mr. Gordon noted that staff was working on budget and FY 07-08 goals.
