HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-06-07; Arts Commission; MinutesMINUTES Carlsbad Arts Commission June 7, 2007 Carlsbad City Council Chambers I- Call to Order Chairman Hill called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. Commissioners Present: Carrillo, DeForest, Fox, Hill, Iserloth, Juncal Commissioners Absent: Francis II. Minutes for Approval On motion by Commissioner Fox, second by Commissioner Iserloth, to approve the March 1, 2007 and April 2, 2007, Minutes. AYES: Commissioners Carrillo, DeForest, Fox, Hill, Juncal and Iserloth ABSENT: Commissioner Francis III. New Business Summer Arts Camps Tonya Rodzach, Community Arts Coordinator-Education, distributed summer camp brochures and gave a PowerPoint presentation on the 2007 Summer Arts Camps Program. Ms. Rodzach responded to Commission inquiries regarding number of children in summer arts camps, scholarship availability, and stated that the Club Pelican camps could possibly be held at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon when there is a nature center available. She stated that Val Brown, Video Production Manager, had already video taped summer arts camps activities several years ago and that the video was shown on the quarterly report and during a recent State of the City address. The Commission suggested that a video of summer arts camps be available for citizens to view on the City's Internet site. Mrs. Balas, Carlsbad resident, addressed the Commission and acknowledged the success of the Summer Arts Camp Program. She showed the Commission a painting that her daughter had done during last year's Summer Arts Camp. Mrs. Balas suggested that an incentive such as a discount of 10% could be offered when a sibling or friend registers at the same time. 2007 TGIF Jazz Concerts Peter Gordon, Arts Manager, distributed the announcement cards for the 2007 season of TGIF Jazz in the Parks concerts to all Commissioners. He informed the Commission about the two concerts that will be held at Pine Park and that extra shuttles had been scheduled for Poinsettia Park and Calavera Hills Park. Mr. Gordon also informed the Commission that Carlsbad Magazine (aka Wheelhouse Media) was partnering with the Arts Office to publish the 2007 TGIF Jazz program and the sale of the ads for that publication. Mr. Gordon added that Furnishings 4 Less had donated some extremely impressive prizes to this year's Opportunity Drawings organized by the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts. Elections of Chair/Vice Chair Nominations were opened for Chair. Commissioner Hill nominated Commissioner Heath Fox for Chair. AYES: Commissioners Carrillo, DeForest, Hill, Juncal and Iserloth ABSENT: Commissioner Francis ABSTAIN: Commissioner Fox Commissioner Iserloth nominated Commissioner Sherman DeForest for Vice Chair. AYES: Commissioners Carrillo, Fox, Hill, Juncal and Iserloth ABSENT: Commissioner Francis ABSTAIN: Commissioner DeForest V, Committee Reports Commissioner DeForest asked Mr. Gordon about an exhibition entitled "Sun Works" organized and toured by NASA. Mr. Gordon said he had been in contact with the organizers and the big problem to possibly bringing the exhibition to the Cannon Art Gallery was the time frame: The Gallery is booked through 2008 and much of 2009 and the exhibition is not touring for that length of time. Commissioner Carrillo informed the Commission that she had attended the Americans for the Arts Conference in Los Angeles and distributed materials to the Commission from the Conference regarding Arts and Business/Economy. Commissioner Iserloth reported on her visit to San Diego's ArtWalk where 400 artists had participated. She informed the Commission that on September 8-9, in Seaport Arts Commission - 2 - June 7, 2007 Village, there would be another ArtWalk. Ms. Iserloth stated that the Plein Air Brunch was a great success and spoke about the auction and lecture. Commissioner Juncal brought the Commission up-to-date on the recent Imagine Carlsbad meeting. Mr. Juncal stated that preparation was underway for the next ArtSplash with lots of ideas in the creative brainstorming stage, and that chalk art is solidly established as an art form. Mr. Juncal will be demonstrating rock stacking at the upcoming Club Pelican. Commissioner Fox spoke about the upcoming "On Your Own Time" exhibit at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery. Commissioner Hill reported that the City Council is exploring the possibility of bringing in Robert McNulty and Partners for Livable Communities as a consultant to the City of Carlsbad. Mr. Gordon distributed the invitation to the "On Your Own Time" exhibition and encouraged Commissioners to attend the opening on Thursday, June 21, from 5 to 7pm. Respectfully submitted.
