HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-12-06; Arts Commission; MinutesMINUTES Carlsbad Arts Commission December 6, 2007 Carlsbad Council Chambers Call to Order and Roll Call Chairman Heath Fox called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. Commissioners Present: Fran Carrillo, Sherman DeForest, Heath Fox, Barbara Iserloth, Ron Juncal Commissioners Absent: Rita Francis, Gary Hill Approval of Minutes On motion by Commissioner Francis, second by Commissioner Iserloth, to approve the Minutes of the Regular Meeting held September 6, 2007, as submitted. New Business A. Review of Recommendations from Community Arts Grants Panel (Colleen Finnegan) Colleen Finnegan, Community Arts Coordinator, gave an overview of the Arts Grants process. She stated that money from last year was rolled over to this year, resulting in $25,000 being available for 2008. Of that amount, 60% was designated for Organizations, and 40% for Arts Education. Commissioner Juncal said that this was a great process and that the panel worked smoothly. Commissioner Carrillo informed the Commission that a careful process is used and that the panel got a good view of what the community is doing and what the schools are providing. Motion by Commissioner Iserloth, second by Commissioner Juncal, to approve the following recommendations of the panel for the Organizations/Artist Partnerships and Arts Education categories for the 2008 Community Arts Grants: 2008 CARLSBAD COMMUNITY ARTS GRANTS ORGANIZATIONS / ARTIST PARTNERSHIPS 1) Carlsbad-Oceanside Art League REQUEST: $1,000 REC: $1,000 Support for nine professional artist workshops in Carlsbad, open to membership and public 2) Patrons for the Arts Foundation / Carlsbad Community Theatre REQUEST: $8,500 REC: $3,750 Support for facility rental for the 25th Anniversary Season of three productions and four or more workshops with showcase presentations at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center. 3) Carlsbad Playhouse REQUEST: $2,000 REC: $2,000 Support for seven rehearsed readings of diverse new and classic plays to be produced and presented in Schulman Auditorium. 4) Museum Of Making Music REQUEST: $4,000 REC: $1,000 Support for eight interactive hands-on, participatory music storytelling programs for children. 5) Carlsbad Arts Partnership REQUEST: $750 REC $750 Support for free series of five workshops by SUAVE artists/coaches for 150 teachers in Carlsbad Unified School District and surrounding districts, interested parents and artists. 6) Fern Street Circus REQUEST: $3,000 REC: $1,500 Support for performances of its 2008 production at ArtSplash Festival in September 2008. 7) Junior Women's Club/Scott Engel REQUEST: $618 REC: $0 Support for a concert of 60's pop music by members of two Carlsbad families who have created a family band. 8) New Village Arts Theatre REQUEST: $5,000 REC: $5,000 Support for 2008, seventh season, five productions in new Village facility and one Shakespeare in the Park. 9) San Diego Opera REQUEST: $1,000 REC: $0 Support for two presentations of Opera for Students at Aviara Oaks School. TOTAL REQUESTS: $ 25,868 TOTAL GRANTS: $15,000 Arts Commission - 2 - December 6, 2007 2008 CARLSBAD COMMUNITY GRANTS - ARTS EDUCATION 1) CHS Band Boosters REQUEST: $1,000 REC: $1,000 Support for Drumline guest artist percussion coach. 2) CHS Drama REQUEST: $1,000 REC: $500 Support for resident choreographer for spring semester musical theatre production. 3) Friends of Pacific Rim REQUEST: $3,000 REC: $1,000 Support for danc match provided. Support for dance instruction program for 1st & 2nd grades. Request was amended, with 4) Montessori Arts & Science School REQUEST: $1,000 REC: $1,000 Support for 20-week mosaic mural project with resident artist. 5) Jefferson Elementary School REQUEST: $2,518 REC: $800 Support for spring and fall semesters violin instruction program for 65 K-5 students. Request was amended with match provided. 6) St. Patrick School REQUEST: $1,000 REC: $1,000 Support for spring semester Readers Theatre program for 1-3 grades. 7) Valley Middle School REQUEST: $700 REC: $700 Support for school-sited two-week "art museum," teacher training and student literary and visual art responses. 8) Hope Elementary School REQUEST: $1,000 REC: $1,000 Support for purchase of instruments to expand the fifth grade music program. (Beginning in 2007, such requests for non-substitutable arts equipment for ongoing use may be submitted and are not considered capital expense). 9) Pacific Ridge School REQUEST: $1,000 REC: $0 Support for creation of a school-sited kiln. (See #8). 10) Kelly Elementary School REQUEST: $1,000 REC: $1,000 Support for puppetry performances and puppetry artist-in-residence program to involve all students K-5. 11) CHS English Language Dev. REQUEST: $1,000 REC: $1,000 Support for spring semester storytelling project for English Language Learners. 12) Buena Vista Elementary REQUEST: $1,000 REC: $1,000 Support for school-wide traditional cultures program. TOTAL REQUESTS: $15,218 TOTAL GRANTS: $10,000 Arts Commission - 3 - December 6, 2007 AYES: Fran Carrillo, Sherman DeForest, Heath Fox, Barbara Iserloth, Ron Juncal NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioners Francis, Hill B; Preview of 2008 exhibitions scheduled for the William D. Cannon Art Gallery (Karen McGuire) Karen McGuire, Gallery Curator, distributed gallery brochures containing the schedule of all the exhibitions through November 2008 and presented an overview of each exhibition. She stated that all exhibitions are planned through 2010. Karen McGuire stated that the public feedback for the Third Cannon Invitational was positive. Karen passed the "In Focus National Geographic Greatest Portraits" book to the Arts Commissioners for their review. She stated that this was a 4-5 year traveling exhibition in the United States. Ms. McGuire informed the Commission that Kenneth Capps, the focus of the Summer 2008 exhibition, was a local Carlsbad resident and nationally renowned artist. His expertise is minimalist sculpture with clean lines and mid-size sculpture. She stated that the upcoming solo exhibition in the William D. Cannon Art Gallery will be his first in San Diego County. Ms. McGuire distributed the catalog for Sleeping Beauties, an exhibition of African headrests scheduled for Fall 2008. She stated that the exhibit is a marriage of form and function and that the exhibition is being loaned from the UCLA Fowler Museum from its Jerome Joss Collection. Not coincidentally, Jerome Joss was the founder of Sealy Posturepedic. The reception for the "In Focus" exhibition will be held on Sunday, January 20, 2008, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. and will be open to the general public. There will also be a 56- minute film documentary about the photographers from National Geographic presented in.the Schulman Auditorium at 3pm and 5pm. C. Report on Prop D Community Workshops (Commissioner Hill) Chairman Fox distributed to all Commissioners a written report from Commissioner Hill who attended the prop D Community Workshop. Commissioner Juncal said that there were lots of ideas and lots of participation and that there was a general consensus on similar ideas including the possibility of an amphitheatre. Public Comment There was no public comment. Arts Commission - 4 - December 6, 2007 Committee Report 1. Commissioners' Reports Commissioner DeForest suggested that art could be displayed on the large recessed lights in the outside foyer of the Dove Library. Peter Gordon stated he would pass along the suggestion to the Library Director. Gommissioner Carrillo informed the Commission that she had attended the quarterly Arts-in-Education Advisory Committee Meeting. Lucy Haines, Director Curriculum and Instruction, Carlsbad Unified School District, spoke about the distribution of state funds coming into Carlsbad schools. Commissioner Carrillo praised Tonya Rodzach, Community Arts Education Coordinator, for inviting the Carlsbad Unified School District to participate in the quarterly meeting. Commissioner Juncal commented on the great Christmas play he had seen at the New Village Arts Theatre. Chairman Fox thanked Peter Gordon and Tonya Rodzach for hosting the recent public art opportunities presentation that involved representatives from surrounding cities and local artists. The discussions looked at public art challenges and opportunities in the area. 2. Manager's Report Peter Gordon, Arts Manager, spoke about how the Gallery program has been successfully implementing its Artistic Vision Statement and commended Karen McGuire for simultaneously establishing the Gallery as a site especially noted for its exhibitions of folk art and contemporary regional artists. Each exhibition is selected using a multitude of variables, including planks of the Vision Statement, prospective audiences, and the relationship to the Three-Part-Art program. Mr. Gordon said that the Gallery is currently inviting visitors to fill out a survey about what they liked, how they heard about the gallery, and were they satisfied with their gallery visit, as part of the city's Performance Measurements program. In January the Opera Lectures Program starts and rack cards have already been printed. The Carlsbad to Karlovy Vary Opera Competition is set for February 23, 2008 and has been advertised.
