Carlsbad Arts Commission

I. Call to Order
Chairman Fox called the meeting to order at 9:02 a.m.
II. Roll Call
Commissioners Present: Aquallo, DeForest, Fox, Francis, Iserloth, and Voll
Commissioners Absent: None
III. Approval of Minutes
On motion by Commissioner Voll, second by Commissioner Iserloth, to approve the
Minutes of the Regular Meeting held December 3, 2009.
AYES: Commissioners Aquallo, DeForest, Fox, Francis, Iserloth, and Voll
NOES: None
IV. New Business
A. Commission Appointments
Chairman Fox announced that Cynthia Millsap had resigned from the Commission
because she had moved out of the state.
Rita Francis announced that this was her last meeting as a member of the Arts
Commission as she has served two full terms.
B. Second presentation of Joint First Responders Training Facility public art concept.
Chairman Fox announced that Michael Stutz would be giving a second
presentation of the Joint First Responders Training Facility public art concept (see
Attachment No. 1 for further details).
Motion by Commissioner DeForest, second by Commissioner Voll, to recommend
to City Council that Michael Stutz's public art concept design for the Joint First
Responders Training Facility be approved.
Peter Gordon, Arts Manager, recapped the process for the public art project (see
Attachment No. 2 for further details).
Michael Stutz gave a slide presentation of his proposed sculpture for the Joint First
Responders Training Facility.
Mike Lopez, Battalion Chief, Fire, stated that this was a collaborative effort with
police and fire, Skip Hammann, Transportation Director, Michael Stutz, and the
architects involved. The detail and vision of the artwork is great.
Bill Rowland, Captain, Police, stated that the majority view of the police department
was positive regarding the public art concept. Current police employees as well as
retirees were polled and were in agreement of the public art piece.
Don Her, Manager of Architecture, Project Architect, rrm design, spoke on behalf of
the public art project.
There was no public comment on this matter.

V. PUBLIC COMMENT
There was no public comment.
VI. COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. Commissioners reported on their recent activities.
B. Arts Manager Gordon distributed informational items regarding the Andre Kertesz
exhibit opening February 20, 2010 and the Arthur Oilman lecture on Saturday,
February 20, 2010. Mr. Oilman was the original founding director of the Museum
of Photographic Arts at Balboa Park.
VII. Adjournment
Chairman Fox adjourned the regular meeting of the Arts Commission at 10:00 a.m.
