Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by Tina Schmidt, Chair. II. Roll Call Commissioners Present: Aquallo, Friese, Markovits, Schmidt, and Voll Commissioners Absent: DeForest, Johnson III. Approval of Minutes Motion by Commissioner Aquallo, second by Commissioner Voll, to approve the Minutes ofthe Regular Meeting held February 2, 2012. AYES: Commissioners Aquallo, Friese, Markovits, Schmidt, and Voll NOES: None ABSTAIN: Commissioner DeForest, Johnson IV. New Business A. Presentation of Citv Council Proclamation to retiring Commissioner Barbara Iserioth Tina Schmidt, Chair, presented a proclamation to Barbara Iserioth as she retires from eight years of service on the Arts Commission. Ms. Iserioth expressed her appreciation for the wonderful years she served on the Arts Commission. "It was interesting for me to see how a well-run city operates. I was very impressed with the talent and creativity in Carisbad. It was a great pleasure to have been a member of the Carisbad Arts Commission." B. Presentation bv Darin Williamson. Librarian, about upcoming teen events at the Library and recruitment of judges. Darin Williamson, Librarian, handed out flyers to the Commission regarding the Teen Talent Shows sponsored by the Carisbad Library. He noted that Teen Talent Shows are scheduled for May 17, May 24, and June 7 and would be contacting Commissioners to see if they were interested in being judges for the event. C Kari von Schlieder. Geographic Information Svstems Coordinator, presentation ofthe interactive mapping system for public art on the city's website. Commissioner Markovits arrived at 9:34 a.m. Mr. von Schlieder, Geographic Information Systems Coordinator, and Tonya Rodzach, Community Arts Coordinator, gave the presentation. Mr. von Schlieder demonstrated the interactive mapping system for the city's Public Art Collection. Ms. Rodzach stated that the complete collection was photographed and placed on the city's website. She noted that each public art piece has an individual enhanced page showing the artwork with a description of the work. This was done to heighten the visibility and accessibility of the collection for the community. D. Committee Assignment Updates New Committee Assignments: Arts-in-Education: added Joan Markovits, replacing Alan Aquallo Community Arts Grants: added Joan Markovits, replacing Tina Schmidt Gallery: added Sibylla Voll, replacing Barbara Iserioth Motion by Commissioner Aquallo, second by Commissioner Voll, to approve the new committee assignments. AYES: Commissioners Aquallo, Friese, Markovits, Schmidt, and Voll NOES: None ABSTAIN: Commissioner DeForest, Johnson V. Public Comment There was no public comment. VI. Commission Reports A. Manager's Report Mr. Gordon, Arts Manager, informed the Commission that the agenda bill proposing to deaccession the Ellen Ziegler artwork at the Dove Library was making its way through the signature cycle. Mr. Gordon reported that Paul Hobson was the artist chosen to create public art for the Alga Norte Park. His designs were approved by City Council in 2007, but because the design ofthe park to be built has been updated since those designs were approved, Mr. Hobson and staff will need to review the artwork in response to the updated park plans. Mr. Gordon announced that the 2012 TGIF Jazz in the Parks Concerts schedule was now on the art department's webpage at http://www.carisbadca.gov/arts via the city's webpage. He also noted that the staff was actively participating in discussions and plans to relocate the Cultural Arts staff from the Elmwood Street house to existing library facilities. Mr. Gordon informed the Commission that Michael Stutz had installed his artwork at the City of Carisbad Safety Training Center and that the date ofthe opening reception would be announced and commissioners invited. B. Commission Reports Commissioner Schmidt instructed that Commission Reports are to be about Carisbad-related events. VII. Announcements Tina Schmidt, Commission Chair, invited the Arts Commissioners to the following meetings and events: May 19 Family Open Studios from 11:00-2:00 p.m. This Is Jazz! Lecture at 4:00 p.m. May 22 Tentative open house date at the Safety Training Center, 10:00 a.m. June 7 Possibly no Arts Commission meeting June 12 Groundbreaking event at Alga Norte Park Juhe 24 Last day of the Brubaker Exquisite Garden exhibition at the William D. Cannon Gallery June 26 Agenda bill at City Council, thanking the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts for their donation of $20,000 and thanking Modern Postcard for in-kind printing services. June 29 First TGIF Jazz in the Parks concert for 2012 June 25 Beginning day of 2012 summer arts camps. July 14 Reception for new exhibition at the Gallery: Public Artists, Private Works VIII.
