Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by Commissioner Schmidt, Chair. II. Roll Call Commissioners Present: Aquallo, Friese, Johnson, Markovits, Schmidt, and Voll Commissioners Absent: DeForest III. Approval of Minutes Motion by Commissioner Voll, second by Commissioner Johnson, to approve the Minutes of the Regular Meeting held November 1, 2012. AYES: Commissioners Friese, Johnson, Markovits, and Schmidt NOES: None ABSENT: Commissioner DeForest and Aquallo ABSTAIN: Commissioner Voll IV. New Business B. Report from Public Art Selection Committee for Fire Station #3 meeting of December 12. 2012 (Curator Karen McGuire). Karen McGuire, Curator, gave an overview of the Public Art Selection Committee process for Fire Station #3. Those presenting artwork before the Committee: Christopher Lee Anne Mudge Betsy Schuiz Lisa Schirmer Richard Becker Ball-Nogues Studio Ms. McGuire announced that Betsy Schuiz was the artist selected to produce the public art component for Fire Station #3. Commissioner Lechusza arrived at 9:27 a.m. A. Review of and action on Peer Review Panel recommendations for 2013 Communitv Arts Grants (Communitv Arts Coordinators Colleen Finnegan and Tonva Rodzach). Colleen Finnegan, Community Arts Coordinator, outlined the Peer Review Panel's process and informed the Commission that John Highkin, Tomoko Kuta, Russ Sperling, Paul Henry, Sherman DeForest, Joan Markovits and Alan Leschusza were the voting members of the Peer Review Panel. Motion by Commissioner Lechusza, second by Commissioner Friese, to approve the 2013 Peer Review Panel's recommendations for 2013 Community Arts Grants for the following: 2013 CARLSBAD COMMUNITY ARTS GRANTS - ARTS EDUCATION Calavera Hills Elementary School REQUEST: $1,700 RECOMMENDED: $876 Support for Meet the Masters visual art programs for 4*^ and 5^^ grade students in Spring 2013 Carlsbad Educational Foundation REQUEST: $1,200 RECOMMENDED: $1,140 Support for art instruction services at district-wide Kids' Care after-school program. Carlsbad High School - Band Boosters REQUEST: $1,200 RECOMMENDED: $1,140 Support for four guest artist coaches, particularly for students in the Wind Symphony. Carlsbad High School - Choral Boosters REQUEST: $1,200 RECOMMENDED: $875 Support for a guest artist residency in choreography for 78 students in two show choirs. Carlsbad High School - Drama Club REQUEST: $1,200 RECOMMENDED: $1,200 Support for guest choreographer-in-residence for the musical theatre production in Spring 2013. Carlsbad High School - REQUEST: $1,200 RECOMMENDED: 0 Broadcasting Program Support for a one-day workshop in storytelling techniques in the digital age for broadcast students in middle and high school media programs. Carlsbad High School-Speech & Debate REQUEST: $1,200 RECOMMENDED: $875 Support for the purchase of specialized textbooks required by Interpretation students. Jefferson Elementary School REQUEST: $1,046 RECOMMENDED: $990 Support for the Jefferson Elementary Choir program, which provides free choral instruction to all interested 3^^ through 5**^ grade students (participation currently 65 students). La Costa Canyon HS - Dance Program REQUEST: $1,000 RECOMMENDED: $766 Support for two workshops with guest choreographers in Spring and Fall 2013. La Costa Canyon HS-Theatre Program REQUEST: $1,200 RECOMMENDED: $1,140 Support for guest vocal coach/pianist for Ctiicago, musical theatre production in Spring 2013. La Costa Canyon HS - Jazz Band REQUEST: $1,200 RECOMMENDED: $876 Support for guest music coach/director for 20-30 members of the LCC Jazz Band. Arts Commission - 2 - December 13, 2012 2013 CARLSBAD COMMUNITY GRANTS - ARTS EDUCATION (Continued) Montessori Arts and Sciences REQUEST: $1,200 RECOMMENDED: $876 Support for an intensive playwriting and theatre performance project. Pacific Rim Elementary REQUEST: $600 RECOMMENDED: 0 Support for the purchase of instruments to be used in a weekly hands-on instructional program for 4**^ and 5**^ grade students. St. Patrick School REQUEST: $1,200 RECOMMENDED: $875 Support for artis semester 2013. Support for artist-led "Write On!" playwriting residency with 100 4*^ and 5*^ grade students in spring Valley Middle School REQUEST: $1,200 RECOMMENDED: $875 Support for choreography instruction for 91 members of 3 school show choirs in Spring and Fall semesters of 2013. TOTAL REQUESTS: $17,446 TOTAL AWARDED: $12,600 2013 CARLSBAD COMMUNITY ARTS GRANTS - ORGANIZATIONS / ARTIST PARTNERSHIPS Animal Cracker Conspiracy REQUEST: $1,250 RECOMMENDED: 0 Support for interactive performances by Animal Cracker Conspiracy at two-day Artsplash free art festival in September 2013. Carlsbad-Oceanside Art League REQUEST $1,700 RECOMMENDED: $760 Support for ten professional artist workshops in Carlsbad which are open to members and to the public. Mainly Mozart REQUEST: $3,600 RECOMMENDED: $1,925 Support for the three-concert chamber music Spotlight Series at St. Elizabeth Seaton Church. Museum of Making Music REQUEST: $5,000 RECOMMENDED: $2,200 Support for Global Spotlight Concert Series of 6 performances by artists whose music represents traditions and innovations around the world. New Village Arts Theatre REQUEST: $7,600 RECOMMENDED: $4,126 Support for 2013 production season with 7 productions, an ongoing music series, two New Play workshops, an education program and the Art Foundry for visual artists. Patrons of the Arts Foundation / REQUEST: $8,000 RECOMMENDED: $3,600 Carlsbad Community Theatre Support for the 2013 season of multiple performances of two youth productions, one family production and five workshops. Sweet Adelines Pacific Belles REQUEST: $2,600 RECOMMENDED: 0 Support for "Barbershop A Cappella Rocks," a one-day instructional/coaching event for young singers culminating in a community showcase concert. TOTAL REQUESTS: $29,450 TOTAL AWARDED: $12,500 Arts Commission -3- December 13,2012 Commissioners Present: Aquallo, Friese, Johnson, Markovits, Schmidt, and Voll Commissioners Absent: DeForest C. Discussion and decision on date for next Commission meeting. The Commission unanimously decided that all future Arts Commission meetings would be held in the Cultural Arts Office Conference Room on the first Thursday of each month with meetings commencing at 9:00 a.m. The Commission announced that the next meeting of the Arts Commission would be held Thursday, January 3, 2013. V. Public Comment There was no public comment. Commissioner Johnson left at 10:03 a.m. VI. Commission Reports A. Manager's Report - Peter Gordon Peter Gordon, Arts Manager, announced that the announcement cards for This Is Jazz!, Family Open Studios and Opera Lectures would be printed and distributed soon. Mr. Gordon reminded Commissioners that International Guitar Night, presented in collaboration with the Museum of Making Music and funded in part by the Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation's Robert H. Gartner Cultural Endowment Fund, would be held on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at the Schulman Auditorium. B. Commissioners' Report Commissioners reported on their recent activities. VII.
