HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-12-05; Arts Commission; MinutesMINUTES MEETING OF: DATE OF MEETING: PLACE OF MEETING: CiTY OF CARLSBAD ARTS COMMISSION Thursday, December 5; 2013 City of Carisbad Council Chambers 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive, Carlsbad CA CALL TO ORDER: Chair Tina Schmidt called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. ROLL CALL: Present: Absent: Staff Present: Commissioners Alter, DeForest, Johnson, Markovits, Schmidt, and Voil None Heather Pizzuto, Vincent Kitch, Cultural Arts Manager, Colleen Finnegan, Jilllah Buccola, Cheryl Blaine APPROVAL OF MINUTES: By proper motion (DeForest/Johnson) and vote, the minutes of the November 7, 2013 regular meeting ofthe City of Carisbad Arts Commission were approved. DISCUSSION AND ACTION ITEMS e The Commission voted to approve the 2014 Community Arts Grants Awards and requested a history ofthe grants and funding with a desire to see if the budget for grants could be increased (Johnson/Markovits). o The Commission voted to move the January date of the Arts Commission meeting to January 9, 2014. The time will remain at 9 a.m. for 2014 (Johnson/Alter). 0 Following recommendations from the public arts advisory pane! and after discussion the Arts Commission voted to reject the donation proposal for a Carlsbad sign as presented (Johnson/DeForest) and thank the generosity of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce and their partners for the offer. Mike Howes, a member of the Executive Board of Directors of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, read a letter prepared for the commission by Ted Owen, President and CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce thanking the commission and the advisory panel for their work on the project and indicating the Chamber was evaluating its options before making a decision on how to proceed. CULTURAL ARTS MANAGER'S REPORT Cultural Arts Manager Vincent Kitch updated the Commission on the following items: « Nearly 400 people attended the Opening-Reception for the "2013 Invitational Exhibition" at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery. 48 works of art by five diffet-ent artists are on display. Family Open Studios was held Saturday, November 23^"^ with over 200 people attending. o Fire Station #3 public art renderings were presented and approved by City Council, o The RFQ for the Round-About/Coastal Rail Trail public art project closed and 86 responses were received. The artist will be chosen next week from five finalists. • Kevin Kelso is working on details of his donation proposal for Fire Station #1 and hopes to bring it back for consideration at the January meeting, o The Arts Education Advisory Committee has been suspended. Attendance by arts education teachers has decreased recently and the Arts Office is looking at other areas of focus In arts education, o Manager Kitch attended the SD Regional Arts and Culture Coalition meeting with Commissioner Johnson, o A new exhibition is open in the Sculpture Garden and a new partnership established with CaHsbad Oceanside Arts League to show local artists' works in the Cultural Arts Office. The Arts Office will partner with other local artist organizations in future months, o New Arts Commissioner Scott White was introduced. FRIENDS OF THE ARTS REPORT o The Meet and Greet event at the Museum of Making Music was well attended. o The Friends of the Arts leadership is preparing the budget and other details for the annual meeting to be held in January, 2014. o The website has successfully accepted online payments for membership to the non- profit.
