HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-02-06; Arts Commission; MinutesMINUTES MEETING OF: DATE OF MEETING: PLACE OF MEETING: CITY OF CARLSBAD ARTS COMMISSION Thursday, Feb 6, 2014 City of Carlsbad Council Chambers 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive, Carlsbad CA CALL TO ORDER: Chair Tina Schmidt called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. ROLL CALL: Present: Absent: Commissioners Alter, DeForest, Johnson, Markovits, Schmidt, Voll and White None Staff Present: Vincent Kitch, Cultural Arts Manager, Tonya Rodzach, Community Arts Coordinator APPROVAL OF MINUTES: By proper motion (DeForest/Alter) and vote, the minutes ofthe Dec 5, 2013 regular meeting of the City of Carlsbad Arts Commission were approved. DISCUSSION AND ACTION ITEMS • The Commission voted unanimously to move ahead with public comments of Coastal Rail Trail Roundabout Public Art Design Concept (Johnson/Markovits). • The Commission authorized Chair Tina Schmidt to speak on behalfofthe Commission in future City Council meetings with regards to the Carlsbad sign donation proposal. (DeForest/White). CHAIR'S REPORT • Chair Tina Schmidt updated the commission on recent changes in city leadership including council, city manager and assistant city manager positions. • Schmidt discussed the results ofthe Cultural Art's section ofthe 2013 Carlsbad Resident Survey. • Scott White was appointed to sit on the Gallery Advisory Committee CULTURAL ARTS MANAGER'S REPORT Cultural Arts Manager Vincent Kitch updated the Commission on the following items: • Our Lives Our Stories Gallery Opening was enjoyed by those who attended. This exhibition has a great deal of programming which coordinates the theme and runs through Mar 16, 2014. • Family Open Studios Plus will be held Feb 8, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with an art making event, two performances by The Amazing Etch Man and The Fabulous Earrings, a singing group performing favorites ofthe 40's, 50's, and 60's. It will be held in the courtyard at the City of Carlsbad Library on Dove Lane, in Schulman Auditorium and Cannon Gallery. • This is Jazz will return for the first installment with a family program entitled "Jazz- An American Art-Form" Rob Thorsen's Jazz Quartet will play. • The public art donation for Fire Station No. 1 will be on a future agenda. • Cultural Arts in the city have recently received positive press coverage. • The General Plan Arts Element update and presentation will be on the April agenda. FRIENDS OF THE ARTS REPORT • Friends ofthe Arts had their annual meeting and elected board members are preparing for TGIF fundraising efforts and now can take credit cards at events because they have a mobile card reading device.
