HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-01-07; Arts Commission; MinutesMINUTES MEETING OF: DATE OF MEETING: PLACE OF MEETING: CARLSBAD ARTS COMMISSION Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016 Carlsbad City Council Chamber 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive Carlsbad, CA CALL TO ORDER: Chair Aaron Alter called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Alter, DeForest, Voll and White Absent: Markovits and Schmidt Staff and Presenters: Vincent Kitch; Cultural Arts Manager, Scott Donnell; Senior Planner APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes for Dec. 10 meeting were approved (White/DeForest) PUBLIC COMMENTS None DISCUSSION ITEMS Scott Donnell, Senior Planner presented the Village & Barrio Master Plan draft to the Arts Commission. Planner Donnell addressed general information about the plan and specific information related to public art within the plan including potential gateway art at entrances to the village and art as a focal point in public plazas. He also spoke about keeping the plan consistent with the general plan of the city. He also discussed architectural design guidelines, public transportation, and plaza and gathering space creation along with potential changes to roads and intersections. CHAIR'S REPORT None MANAGER'S REPORT Foreign Film Fridays began anew in Jan. with two showings of each film, 5 and 7 p.m. This season they will be shown at the Senior Center due to the renovation of Schulman Auditorium and the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane. The 2015 Invitation Exhibition will close Jan. 31 and the Cannon Gallery will then be closed until the library remodel project is completed. The Carlsbad City Council will be receiving a staff report of the Public Art Master Plan in January. The mobile stage will be presented for final approval at an upcoming council meeting. A review panel of city staff, arts commissioners (Markovits & Alter), arts professionals and community stakeholders will review and make an artist selection for the public art for Pine Park on Jan. 25. Artist Michael McLaughlin is working on design concepts for the public art of Aviara Park. February is Commissioners Voll and DeForest's last Arts Commission meeting. The city did a press release, and publicized the vacancies in the Arts News and an e-blast. The response has been promising and the city hopes to fill the vacant positions soon. Based on input from the Arts Commission at last month's meeting, the consultant has been rescheduled to begin the community cultural plan process in Mar. Key individuals from all areas of the community need to be identified for interviews and invitations to community meetings.
