HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-03-03; Arts Commission; MinutesMEETING OF: DATE OF MEETING: PLACE OF MEETING: CALL TO ORDER: MINUTES CARLSBAD ARTS COMMISSION Thursday, March 3, 2016 Carlsbad City Council Chamber 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive Carlsbad, CA Chair Aaron Alter called the meeting to order at 9:00a.m. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Alter, Breslaw, Jadhav, Markovits, Schmidt and White Absent: None Staff and Presenters: Vincent Kitch; Cultural Arts Manager APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes for Feb. 4, 2016 meeting were approved (Schmidt/White) with two abstentions (Breslaw and Jadhav) PUBLIC COMMENTS None DISCUSSION ITEMS Chairman Alter welcomed two new Arts Commissioners, Cathy Breslaw and Emma Jadhav. Each commissioner introduced him/herself to the others. CHAIR'S REPORT Chair Alter was in attendance at the Carlsbad City Council meeting where approval was given for Imagine the Possibilities: A Public Art Vision for the City of Carlsbad. Alter also attended the opening of Fire Station #3 and praised this as a good example of public art. He also encouraged the other commissioners to visit the sight to see the installed public art. MANAGER'S REPORT The opening of Fire Station #3 and dedication ofthe artwork was held Feb. 29. Commissioners Schmidt and Alter along with former commissioner Vall were thanked for their attendance. Programs continue successfully at the Senior Center until the Schulman Auditorium renovations are completed. In partnership with parks & recreation and Leo Carrillo Historic Park, the arts office is transforming Deedie's house into a gallery and have issued a call for plein air artists to submit work. The opening for this exhibition will be Sunday, April 3. The city is currently in design contract development with artist Jenna Didier for the Pine Avenue public art project. Final public art designs for Aviara Community Park are scheduled to go to city council on March 22. There is still one vacancy left to be filled on the arts commission. Community arts grants changes are being proposed and will be brought before the arts commission. Changes may include moving the process online and streamlining procedures. City Council approved Imagine the Possibilities: A Public Art Vision for the City of Carlsbad. The title of the document was altered at the request of the city council to change the word 'plan' to 'vision.' Thanks to the arts commissioners in attendance. Such support, along with community support is important to the city council. Cultural planning will begin in earnest in April and commissioners are encouraged to identify key individuals from all areas of the community to interview. Please email recommendations to Manager Kitch. COMMISSION COMMENTS Commissioner White reports that New Village Arts will be placing a request for a 5 year lease extension with the city to use their existing building. The theater will be revamped with new paint and the repurposed seats donated from the Schulman auditorium. The fund raising gala is March 5. New Village Arts education programs have increased fourfold including partnering with more high schools. They recently did some work with children with autism and Down syndrome where the children got to create their own program. Commissioner Schmidt reported that the names of previous donors will have their names placed on the arms ofthe new theater seating in Schulman Auditorium. The city council has new strategic goals each year. They fall in categories mostly to do with the coastline. Other areas address are the Barrio and Village Master Plan, lowering the railroad tracks, transportation systems, and a new city hall location. The arts commission should consider these goals with their involvement with the commission. Commissioner Markovits emphasized all the city has to offer to residents, their visitors and businesses and not just tourists. The work done by the arts commission can have a very big impact on the future ofthe City of Carlsbad. Chair Alter discussed about how art can bring revenue into the city and can drive economic development.
