HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-05-05; Arts Commission; MinutesMEETING OF: DATE OF MEETING: PLACE OF MEETING: CALL TO ORDER: MINUTES CARLSBAD ARTS COMMISSION Thursday, May 5, 2016 Carlsbad City Council Chamber 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive Carlsbad, CA Chair Aaron Alter called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. ROLL CALL: Present: Absent: Staff Commissioners Alter, Barker, Breslaw, Jadhav, Markovits, Schmidt and White None Library & Cultural Arts Director Heather Pizzuto; Community Arts Coordinator Megan Gilby APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the April 7, 2016 meeting were approved as amended. (Breslaw/White} PUBLIC COMMENTS None DISCUSSION & ACTION ITEMS 1. Meeting Schedule -The commission discussed possible days and times for the Arts Commission meeting and determined to keep the meeting on the first Thursday of each month at 9 a.m. 2.Cultural Arts Office Program Review -Community Arts Coordinator Megan Gilby presented an overview of TGIF Concerts in the Parks including this year's lineup of artists and information about the new mobile stage scheduled to be delivered near the beginning of June. CHAIR'S REPORT Chair Alter recommended Oceanside Museum of Art night concerts which he has found very enjoyable and a good example of programming featuring both visual and performance elements. He would like to see more programming of this nature in the City of Carlsbad to include visual and performing arts components. Alter expressed his desire to see the new manager of the Cultural Arts Division as a visionary, not just a program manager. MANAGER'S REPORT In the absence of a cultural arts manager, Library & Cultural Arts Director Heather Pizzuto presented the manager's report. • The Aviara Community Park public artwork contract is being executed. The approved artwork will be completed in approximately 9-12 months and will be installed in the park when complete. • The Pine Avenue Park public artwork is currently in the design process. More information will be forthcoming when available. The Arts and Culture Master Plan is expected to be briefly paused until a manager is appointed. • The city will recruit a new cultural arts manager. In the meantime Director Pizzuto is available via email or phone and accessible at any time to the Commission. COMMISSION COMMENTS Commissioner Laurenn Prater Barker was asked to introduce herself as this was her first meeting. Commissioners Jadhav and Breslaw reported that they will attend TGIF concerts and join the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts. Commissioner White reported that the New Village Arts production of Big River is sold out for the rest of its run. It will be nominated for Best Musical in San Diego. He also would like to find a way to better communicate to the community about arts events happening in the city. He expressed appreciation for the accomplishments of former Cultural Arts Manager Kitch. Commissioner Schmidt attended the April 26 city council meeting to support the approval of the public artwork proposed for Aviara Community Park. She informed the commission and community that there are art-making experiences led by the staff of the Cultural Arts Office at every TGIF concert. She also reported on the Museum of Making Music exhibition "The Banjo: A New Day for an Old Instrument/' in conjunction with New Village Arts' production of Big River. Commissioner Markovits would like to see a preview of the Carlsbad City Library upon completion of the remodel project. She has enjoyed New Village Arts productions. She expressed appreciation for the work advanced during the former cultural arts manager's tenure which included doubling the grant money and increasing the budget.
