HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-01-04; Arts Commission; MinutesMEETING OF: OF MEETING: PLACE OF MEETING: CALL TO ORDER: MINUTES CARLSBAD ARTS COMMISSION DATE Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018 Board Room Carlsbad City Library 1775 Dove Lane Carlsbad, CA Chair Cathy Breslaw called the meeting to order at 9:15 a.m. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Alter, Breslaw, Jadhav, Schmidt & White Absent: Commissioners Barker & Markovits Staff and presenters: Cultural Arts Manager Richard Schultz; Community Arts Coordinator Megan Gilby; Senior Office Specialist Sandra Riggins; Administrative Assistant Mimi Kim; Founder & Director of the Carlsbad Art Wall Bryan Snyder APPROVAL OF MINUTES: By proper motion, the minutes of the Arts Commission meeting of Dec. 7, 2017 were approved as amended (4-0-1-2 Alter abstain, Barker and Markovits absent) PUBLIC COMMENT None GRANTEE UPDATE PRESENTATION-CARLSBAD ART WALL Bryan Snyder, Founder and Director of the Carlsbad Art Wall, presented an overview of the use of a City of Carlsbad Community Arts Grant funds for an ongoing mural project of temporary public art in Carlsbad Village. He presented a power point presentation showing different murals, collaborative efforts with other artists and community members, educational opportunities for local children and teens and public reaction to the wall. The Commissioners expressed support for the program and for Snyder's leadership in the community. CHAIR'S REPORT Chair Breslaw expressed optimism and enthusiasm for 2018 and upcoming public art and other art programs. CULTURAL ARTS MANAGER REPORT Upcoming events include: • Foreign Film Fridays: Jan. 5 and 19 • Opera Previews: Maria de Buenos Aires, Jan. 27, • Starring Artists: A new interview and performance series generously sponsored by the Friends of the Arts. The first event focuses on New Village Arts and Teatro Pueblo Nuevo. Host Nina Garin from KPBS will be interviewing director Herbert Siguenza and actor Nadia Guevara followed by a performance of Cinderella Eats Rice and Beans. • Grand opening of Pine Avenue Park will be May 2018 with activities including Jenna Didier's public art. • Six theme-based white papers for the Arts & Culture Plan will be released early Feb. • Author Daniel Pink will be the featured author for Carlsbad Reads Together and will speak on Sunday, Feb. 11. • Gallery Advisory Committee will meet Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. in the Cannon Gallery and the Public Art Committee will meet Feb. 5 at 4 p.m. in the Carlsbad City Library Boardroom. • The Arts & Culture Plan workshop with the Arts Commission is tentatively scheduled for March 8. All commissioners should email their availability to meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day. FRIENDS OF THE ARTS REPORT None COMMISSION COMMENTS Commissioner Alter expressed interest in greater use of the Schulman Auditorium. Commissioner White announced A Final Draft: A New Play Festival occurring at New Village Arts theatre this week presenting readings of three new plays starting Jan. 4. The cost is $5 per performance and announced that Nadia Guevara is the new Associate Artistic Director of New Village Arts. Commissioner Jadhav invited the Commissioners to a short film premiere by Ricky Lawrence titled An Expanded Mind featuring artist Chase Hartman on Jan . 4 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Oak & Elixir in Carlsbad Village.
