HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-04-05; Arts Commission; MinutesMEETING OF: OF MEETING: PLACE OF MEETING: CALL TO ORDER: MINUTES CARLSBAD ARTS COMMISSION DATE Thursday, Apr. 5, 2018 Board Room Carlsbad City Library 1775 Dove Lane Carlsbad, CA Chair Cathy Breslaw called the meeting to order at 9:15 a.m. ROLL CALL: Present: Absent: Staff: Commissioners Breslaw, Jadhav, Markovits, Schmidt, Snyder & White Commissioners Barker Cultural Arts Manager Richard Schultz; Senior Office Specialist Sandra Riggins; Programs and Venues Coordinator Karen McGuire APPROVAL OF MINUTES: By proper motion, the minutes of the Arts Commission meeting of Feb. 1, 2018 were approved as amended {4-0-2-1 Markovits and Snyder abstain, Barker absent) By proper motion, the minutes of the Arts Commission workshop of Mar. 8, 2018 were approved as amended {4-0-2-1 Jadhav and Snyder abstain, Barker absent) PUBLIC COMMENT None WELCOME TO NEW AND REAPPOINTED COMMISSIONERS Chair Breslaw thanked Aaron Alter for his years of service in the Arts Commission and welcomed reappointed commissioner Jenna Jadhav and new commissioner Bryan Snyder. Commissioner Snyder introduced himself and briefly described his involvement in the art community. PUBLIC ART UPDATE: AVIARA AND PINE AVENUE COMMUNITY PARKS The artwork for Aviara Community Park is completed and is safely stored by the artist waiting completion of the park estimated for May 2019. The work on the new community center and work at Pine Avenue Community park are on track for a May 19th grand opening. Commissioner Breslaw recommended a video be made of the construction of the willow dome. ARTS & CULTURE PLAN UPDATE Manager Schultz updated the commissioners on the Arts & Culture Plan. The plan previews were released on April 2 and surveys will be open for comment until April 13. CHAIR'S REPORT Chair Breslaw expressed that the March 8 Arts Commission workshop was very beneficial and was pleased that the Arts Commission had an opportunity for input. CULTURAL ARTS MANAGER REPORT Manager Schultz reported on recent and upcoming events with highlights including near capacity audiences at Foreign Film Fridays, doubling of attendance at Starring Artists and over 1,450 participants in the California History & Art program at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park. Upcoming training of commissioners from the City Clerk's Office will include a review of the Ralph M. Brown Act and City of Carlsbad meeting protocol. Date and time to be determined. COMMISSION COMMENTS Commissioner White announced the upcoming shows of New Village Arts, Men on Boats and Avenue Q. Commissioner Markovits requested that the Arts & Culture Plan be written in a more user-friendly way and requested that any items that are going to be discussed be sent to the commissioners earlier. Commissioner Jadhav, who was instrumental in the collaboration between Cannon Gallery's Prom Dress: Seventeen on Being 17 exhibition and Carlsbad High School's Film Academy, expressed a desire to initiate more collaboration between the city and other arts organizations. Commissioner Snyder reported on his art projects, an Easter egg project, mural projects at Aviara Middle School and Pacific Ridge and an interview with CBS news.
