APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
By proper motion, the Arts Commission approve the minutes of the May 3, 2018 Arts Commission
meeting. (7-0-0-0)
PUBLIC COMMENT
None
CITY HALL UPDATE
Assistant City Manager Gary Barberio updated the commissioners on the City Hall and Civic Center
Project including an overview, summary of the work to date, opportunities for input and schedule as
well as answered commissioner's questions.
CULTURAL ARTS BUDGET OVERVIEW FISCAL YEAR 2018-2019
Senior Management Analyst Fiona Everett and Associate Analyst Debbie Jo McCool presented the
cultural arts budget overview for fiscal year 2018-2019 including changes and key goals for 2018-2019
and answered commissioner's questions.
ACTION ITEM: VOTE TO RECOMMEND FOR APPROVAL OF THE ARTS & CULTURE PLAN TO THE CITY
COUNCIL
Commissioners voted unanimously to table the vote on the Arts & Culture Plan until June 13,
2018 to give additional time for staff to complete edits. (7-0-0-0)
CHAIR REPORT
Chair Breslaw commented that the City Council seems to be on board about the Arts & Culture
Master Plan. She attended the willow planting with the artist at Pine Avenue Community Park and
reminded the commissioners of upcoming elections for chair and vice-chair of the Arts Commission.
CULTURAL ARTS MANAGER REPORT
Foreign Film Fridays end June 15 with The Wave, a thriller from Norway.
Prom Dress: Seventeen on Being 17 closes June 17 and Stellaluna will open July 1, with a reception
June 30 at 5 p.m.
Janell Cannon will be at TGIF Family Open Studios on 7 /13 and at the Gallery every Friday working
on new art.
COMMISSION COMMENTS
Commissioners attended various community arts events to include the opening of Pine Ave.
Community Park, the opening of the Performing Arts Center at Sage Creek High School, local
performance by New Village Arts and CHS Film Academy Film Festival and participated in their own art
projects. Commissioners announced that the Carlsbad Unified Superintendent announced that the
schools are moving to a STEAM program, the Museum of Making Music is having a National Make
Music Day on Thursday, June 21 and that the Carlsbad Performing Arts Center at Carlsbad High School
is being renovated.
