DISCUSSION OF FALL ARTS COMMISSION RETREAT
Commissioners discussed details relating to an upcoming retreat which may be facilitated by Trudy
Sopp, retained through the Center for Organizational Effectiveness. Commissioners would like to meet on Dec.
6, if possible, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Staff will confirm available dates for the facilitator along with polling the
two commissioners who were absent about their availability.
Commissioners would like additional clarification and direction from City Council on parameters of their work
plan. The meeting will be open to the public and a location will be determined later.
CHAIR REPORT
Chair Barker welcomed all the commissioners at her first meeting and discussed meeting protocol.
Vice-chair Snyder volunteered to assist with managing each meeting’s focus and timekeeping.
CULTURAL ARTS OFFICE REPORT
Manager Schultz introduced the staff report which will alert commissioners and the public to
upcoming events and topics in advance of the meeting. Additionally, he updated the
commissioners on recruitment for the vacant community arts coordinator position, additional
grants workshops and a new program which will permit potential grant recipients to submit their
proposals for a pre-submission draft review.
An update was presented on progress with the Pine Ave. Community Park public art.
Commissioners asked questions related to attendance at TGIF (attendance fluctuated more this
summer than in previous years) and how much money the Friends of the Arts had made during
TGIF (Friends of the Arts usually disclose that information in October or November).
Arts Commissioners also asked questions in relation to the beach chair temporary art project and it
was determined that additional conversation should be added as a future agenda item.
COMMISSION COMMENTS
Various commissioners attended Art in the Village, the State of the City Address, Carlsbad Music
Festival and Cannon Gallery Artist in Residence Janell Cannon. Commissioners reported on a new
artist, Carly Ealey, on the Carlsbad Art Wall and the success of Legally Blonde by New Village Arts, both
current or previous Arts Grants recipients.
Commissioners Breslaw and White will not be in attendance for the Oct. 4 Arts Commission.
ADJOURNMENT
Chair Barker adjourned the meeting at 10:19 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandra Riggins
