APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
By proper motion, the Arts Commission approved the minutes of the Sep. 6, 2018 Arts Commission
meeting (4-0-1-2 with Jadhav absent and Schmidt and Markovits abstaining).

None
DISCUSSION OF FALL ARTS COMMISSION RETREAT
Commissioners discussed additional details relating to an upcoming Arts Commission retreat which
will be facilitated by Trudy Sopp, retained through the Center for Organizational Effectiveness. The
facilitator will be speaking with each commissioner via phone in advance of the meeting to discuss
priorities and concerns. The meeting is scheduled for Dec. 6 at Pine Ave Recreation Center from 9 a.m.
to 12 p.m.
PRESENTATION: CONFERENCE RECAP
The Commissioners received reports of three professional conferences attended by staff which
included American Alliance of Museums attended by Karen McGuire and Chase Dougherty, Arts
Education Partnership attended by Megan Gilby and Michelle Kaskovich and Western Arts Alliance
attended by Megan Gilby.
The presenters shared take-aways from the_ conferences which aligned with ideas and initiatives in
the Arts & Culture Master Plan and could be implemented in a city the size of Carlsbad.
CHAIR REPORT
Chair Barker expressed appreciation of the Dove library complex including the Schulman Auditorium
and Cannon Gallery. She attended the Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation (CLAF) Gala and was
impressed by the caliber of talent performing and the event overall.
CULTURAL ARTS OFFICE REPORT
Manager Schultz discussed the current Request for Proposal (RFP) for a Feasibility Study and
Market Survey for a Performing and Visual Arts Venue as was recommended in the Arts & Culture
Master Plan. The deadline for proposals is Nov. 30, 2018.
The current status of the public art at Pine Ave Community Park was discussed and commissioners
had an opportunity to ask questions related to the completion of the work, timeline, etc.
COMMISSION COMMENTS
Commissioners attended the new program, Front Row Fridays and expressed very positive comments.
Other commissioners also attending Foreign Film Fridays, the Sculpture Garden opening and Beloved
Object, the current exhibition at the Cannon Art Gallery. One commissioner graduated from Citizen's
Academy. A commissioner expressed interest in· improving communication for all arts in the city and
asked that communications be added a future agenda item.

Chair Barker adjourned the meeting at 10:41 a.m.
