HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-09-05; Arts Commission; MinutesMEETING OF: DATE OF MEETING: PLACE OF MEETING: Call to Order ARTS COMMISSION CARLSBAD ARTS COMMISSION Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019 Council Chamber 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive Carlsbad, CA Chair Laurenn Barker called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. Roll Call Present: Absent: Staff and guests: Approval of Minutes Commissioners Barker, Chamberlain, Jadhav, Markovits, Schmidt & Snyder. White Cultural Arts Manager Richard Schultz; Community Arts Coordinator Laurette Garner; Senior Office Specialist Sandra Riggins; Administrative Assistant Mimi Kim; Curatorial Assistant Nicole Bagley The commissioners approved the minutes of Aug. 1, 2019 (4-0-1-2 with White absent and Chamberlain and Markovits abstaining). Public Comment Charles Dozer, President of Carlsbad Oceanside Art League, distributed print materials for the current Exhibition of 5 artists from Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, and updated the commissioners on summer attendance numbers and events. Gisele Bray introduced herself and her new studio, Gisele B Studios, and invited the commissioners to attend the grand opening on Sept. 29, 4 -8 p.m. Election of Arts Commission Chair and Vice-Chair Action Item: Commissioners re-elected Commissioner Barker as Chair and Commissioner Snyder as Vice Chair (6-0-1-0 with White absent). Encina Power Plant Smoke Stack Discussion Manager Schultz presented a memo from Deputy City Manager Gary Barberio who reported that the power plant is on private property and the property owners are not interested in designating the smoke stack as an historic site. Commissioners read and discussed the memo and decided no further action is needed. Chair Report Chair Barker attended the city's State of the Community luncheon and distributed a copy ofThe Business of Arts and Culture: Statistics. She reported a lack of information about the arts and requested that fellow commissioners continue to let others in the community know of art events the city offers. Cultural Arts Office Report Manager Schultz thanked the commissioners who participated on the panel to choose the mural artist for Georgina Cole Library. Local Carlsbad artist Jason Markow was chosen to complete the mural. Nicole Bagley, the new curatorial assistant, was introduced. Manager Schultz and community arts coordinator Megan Gilby attended the Western Arts Association conference in Los Angeles. They will report out at a later date. Action Item: Commissioners elected to cancel the October Arts Commission Meeting (6-0-1-0 with White Absent). Commissioner Comments Commissioners reported on their personal art activities and public involvement including participating on the panel to choose the Cole Library mural artist. A comm issioner also spoke of a discussion with a member of the city's communications team regarding potential hashtags for arts related activities.
