MEETING OF: CARLSBAD TOURISM BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT
DISTRICT BOARD MEETING
DATE OF MEETING: January 22, 2014
TIME OF MEETING: 1:30 p.m.
PLACE OF MEETING: Room 173A, Faraday Administrative Center, 1635 Faraday Avenue
CALL TO ORDER: Chair Stripe called the Meeting to order at 1:33 p.m.
ROLL CALL was taken by the Administrative Secretary as follows:
Present: Nayudu, Akers, Canepa, Stripe.
Absent: Allen, Becerra, McCormick.
CONSENT ITEMS:
The Board concurred to move approval of the Minutes on the advice of General Counsel to the
next board meeting due to the fact that members present at this meeting were not in attendance
at the previous meeting.
REPORTS AND DISCUSSION ITEMS
IV. STAFF REPORT
Staff liaison Cheryl Gerhardt presented the staff report and PowerPoint presentation reviewing
the expenses and revenues as well as a mid-year financial overview (on file in the Office of the City
Clerk).
Assistant City Manager Kathy Dodson gave the board an update on the tourism study stating that
the committee was still interviewing the consultants. She stated that staff planned on bringing
the committee selection to Council before April.
Board member Canepa suggested conducting a prism study.
In response to an inquiry from Chair Stripe, Ms. Dodson replied that segmentation was being
addressed. Ms. Dodson also replied that analysis of group marketing, regarding how to increase
the market and its importance in the market place would also be considered.
General Counsel Edmonson outlined the process to the Board regarding the selection of the
committee, presentation to Council and award of contract to the consultant group.
In response to an inquiry from board member Akers, Ms. Dodson stated that it may take ten
weeks or so to prepare the study.

V. CARLSBAD ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
Economic Development Manager Christina Vincent presented a PowerPoint presentation (on file
in the Office of the City Clerk) regarding the branding campaign the city is currently working on
with businesses in Carlsbad.
VII. NEXT MEETING
The board concurred with the selection of the following board members to work as a
subcommittee to assist with preparation of the CTBID 2014-15 budget:
Board Members Akers, Stripe, Becerra.
The board concurred to hold its next meeting on April 16, 2014, at 1:30 p.m.
By proper motion the Board Meeting of January 22, 2014, was adjourned at 2:13 p.m.
