MINUTES
MEETING OF: HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION

CALL TO ORDER:
Chair Hinman called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The minutes of the November 8, 2010 meeting of the Historic Preservation Commission were
unanimously approved as submitted (Smith/Wachter).
ORDINANCE REVISIONS FOR CHAPTER 2.42 & 22.04 OF THE MUNICIPAL CODE
Deputy Library Director Smithson reported that City Planner Don Neu had been advised that the
Commission did not support his recommended changes to their proposed changes to the
ordinances. A meeting is scheduled for tomorrow involving herself, the City Planner, and the two
department directors, Gary Barberio, Community & Economic Development and Heather Pizzuto
Library & Cultural Arts, to discuss the issue from the two perspectives. Depending on the
conclusion of that meeting the ordinance may come back to this Commission or be sent forward to
the City Attorney's office.
INVENTORY & PROPERTIES OF CONCERN:
Deputy Library Director Smithson provided an update on the following items:
2220 David Place - Marron home - The letter of response was sent to Dr. Colling of the
Carlsbad Historical Society explaining the Commission's position at this time.
City Records Office - The office is still involved in the process of researching any properties
designated as having historical significance prior to the 1990 study, in an effort to combine these
properties and ask Council to designate the list as the official inventory.

Addition of the walking tour brochure to the website - the request was sent forward to
the appropriate staff group and they are working on having the content included on the website,
and include both the old and current photographs of the locations to make the sites easier to
identify.
Commissioner Hinman commented that the Commission should consider adding Evans Point as a
historical site as one of the last Kelly properties.
CARLSBAD HISTORICAL SOCIETY UPDATES:
Commissioner Smith reported that all five of the Jefferson Elementary School third grade classes
toured Magee House last month.
ANNOUNCEMENTS;
Deputy Library Director Smithson announced she was working with the Council secretary to set
the date for the awards to take place and once the date is established the routine letters will go
out to the teachers with a timeline for the annual art contest.
Working paper #4 of the Envision Carlsbad project includes information on Carlsbad historical
resources and Deputy Library Director Smithson provided the Commissioners with a link to that
document.
Progress on the Heritage Tree survey is dependent on some corrections needed before the report
can go forward. Parks Supervisor Kyle Lancaster is working with the author, Mark Wisniewski, on
the corrections.
Commissioner Daly announced that she had heard the Castles of Carlsbad home tour had been
cancelled for 2011.
