The ttAqueduct water" is far superior to the water fron the Calavera Well. 'I&s is. readily to be seenb there is no question as to the "First to be consnidered is the total amount of mineral. matter; the Colorado River Mater contains 600 parts per million, and the Calavera water 1050 parts per million (I have here rounded off the figures given in the analysis for easier remembrance.) This is of great importance because one of the ftrst troubles' encountered in irrigation practice is the overconcentration of mineral salts in the soil solution at the root zone. Obviously the greater the mineral load in the applied watery the sooner deleterious concentrations will be reached in the soil solution. More than that, since the natural treatmenb for sverkoncentration is to wash out the dissolved salts by a generous application of irrigation water, it is apparent'that the higher the concentration of salts in the applied water, the greater the dlfficulty of diluting the soil solution. Of course) in order that this leaching process may be effective it is essential that the irrigated land shall be open (naturally or through deep tillage) so that the concentrated solution can be drained away from the root zone, This means free drainage of the entire tract ' under irrigation, '*Second in importance is the amount of the cloride ion in the irrigation water. The figures for these waters, ex- pressed in terms of 13Blilligram Equivalentsn per liter, (see the paragraph headed "Reacting Valuesttin the analytical sh'eets) are: Colorado River Water, 1.95 milligram equiva- lents; CaLaaera IYelI9 12.63 milligram equivalents, or more than six times as much as in "Aqueduct Water." I am told that avocado growers in San Diego believe that water containing more than two milligram equivalents of chloride are undesir- able for irrigation of that crop. This is probably an extreme opinion, but avocadoes are very sensitive and require careful treatment. "Of lesser importance is the amount of sulphate. The figures for these waters are: "Aqueduct Water" 5.35 milli- gram equivalents: Calavera Well, 1.83 miLLfgram equivalents definitely in favor of the Calarera Ilfiell, but the gain is of small importance. ( "Last, but far from least, is the value listed in the analyses ("Chenical Properties" paragraph, last 1;lne) as 'IPercent SodiUm.t1 This is the percentage relationship which _.- " - sodiun bears to total bases (i.e., calcfum, magnesium and sodium, and potassium if ,any.) As an example, looking at the *lCharacter Formula" in the analysis of Calavera Well water it is seen that the"t tal of the three bases is 50 while that for sodium is 25, and $$ r= 50 percent. In the same way the sodim and potassium valu for Colorado Rive2 water is t 38.14. Here again the derived value is slightly in favor "Aqueduct Water." * '*But as to the significance of all these various criteria, let me quote a widely recognized authority, viz,, Frank IVI, Eaton, Associate Phyqiologist, Bureau of Plant IndustryyUnited States Department of Agriculture, In Technical Bulletin No.448, February 1935, issued by the Department of Agriculture, entitled *')Boron in Soils and Irrigation Water and its Effect on Plants," pages 32-33, he says: "Clorides in a water supply ordinarily cannot be expected to produce injurious effects of material consequence below a concentration of 4 or 5 milligram equivalents per liter, whereas some injury is geoerally certain;above 8 or 10 =.e. Toxic effects from sulphates cannot ordinarily be expected from water containing less than 7 or 8 nee.$ but they are highly probable above 20 n.e+ The effects of chlorides and sulphates between these limits are relative to condftions and crops, and the limits are of only moderate significance, since outstanding exceptions might be noted. In view of the uncertainties occasioned by varied conditions, it is preferable to think of the quality of waters with respect to chlorides as being better as the chloride concentrations drop below 7 m.e, and poorer as they exceed it. For sulphates, 12 m, e. provides an equally suitable base. ttThe ratio of alkali bases, i.e., sodium and potas- sium, to the alkaline earth bases, calcium and magnesiwn is of particular significance, since upon this ratio the maintenance of permeability of soils to irrigation water is many times dependent,. An permeable soil not only provides an unsatisfactory seed bed and prevents good .aeration but it takes water slowly and does not leach freely* An irrigation water of given salinity used Sa sufficient abundance may be entirely satisfactory on a -permeable soil and yet render unproductive other soils .that may no% be adequately leached.t' 1 ttEhen sodium constitutes a large proportion of the bases of an "irrigation water, similar relationships .must ultimately exist in-the soil. The rapidity with -which such changes are brought about is contingent not 'only upon the proportion of sodium in the water and its concentration but likewise upon the proportions and amounts of replaceable calcium and magnesium and sodium in the exchange complex: of the soil. Viaters carrying sodfwn to the extent of 65 percent of the total bases are looked upon as being of doubtful quality, waters with less than 50 percent as being wholly satisfactory in this regard, and those with more c ._- [- .. than 65 percent of sodium .as -presenting a progressively greater hazard as the percentage increases. But with this interpretation it must be recognized that water very low in total salinity, even though sodium prodominated, might be used for many years on a soil high in calcium carbonate or in absorbed "calcium *sad magnesfum.ft "In this connection, it is to be remembered that untreated Colorado River water has been successfully used to irrigate a diversity of crops in the Imperial Valley for over forty yearst and is stfl1. being used on the sane areas+ "In closing I wish to add a few thoughts about water from the Calavera Well as it is represented by the pres6nt analysis. fWe have an analysis of a sample of water from your North Yard well on December 10, 1953, the sane dag on which the Calavera Well sample was taken. I assme the North Yard Well produces water which is characteristic of ground waters in the general area, so I am employing its analysis to show the alter- ations which are evident in the Calavera wqter. For convenience of reference, 1 reproduce here the I'Gravirnetr3.c Analysis" (in part) and the "Character Formula" for these two waters and also for Ocean Water, and wish to call. your attention tm the changes exhibited in the Calavera water. Seventy parts per million of c carbo ate (CO ) is equal to 142 parts permillion of bicarbonate (HCO 7. In wdichever form it might be stated, carbonate or bica 1 bonate, the value in the "Character Formula" would remain the same, viz: 0.16 per cent. "Nost striking, of course , is the increase $n chloride (r,*Gravimetric Analysis") Calavera Well water carrying more than twice as much as found in the North Yard Well, Next to attract attention is the decrease in sulphates from 253 parts per million in the>Horth Well, to only 88 parts per million in the Calavera Well, Also noteworthy is the loss of bicarbonate in the Calavera Well, more than 100 parts per million less than at the North Yard Well, t~ Turning now to the '*Character Formuha", note that all of these changes make Calavera water look more and more like the Character Fomula of ocean water. Particularly convincing is the gain in chloride at the expense of carbonate, the latter ion being reduced from 16.22 per cent in the North Yard Well. to 9.62 per cent at Calavera, which is a good start toward the value of 0.16 per cent in sea water. llA1l in all, the present analysis seems to warrant the belief? that the Calavera Well has been invaded by ocean water. If this should prove to be the case, Calavera water would gradu- ally become poorer and poorer for either irrigation or domestic use9 and the greater the rate of pumpage, the sooner deteriora- tion would occur, rtI am sorry to have to report adversely upon one of your wells9 but it is my obligation to the Carlsbad Mutual Water Company to truthfully interpret the meaning of these analyses as I see it, Accordingly my advice is not consider water from the Calavera Well as desirable for any purposer I suggest, how- ever, that another analysis of this water should be made within a month or two (provided the well is pumped in the meantime) o in an effort to verify the existence of sea water infiltration.
