BEACH & TREE COMMISSION August 10 The first meeting of Carlsbad City Parks, Recreation, Beach and Tree Commission was held August 10, 1953, in the City Hall Mayor C. D. McClellan administered the oath of allegiance and swore in the following members to their Commission duties: Howard Oldham, Mrs. Chas. Felt, Jerry McClellan, Ben Acuna, Dr. Walter L. Glines, Mrs. Wayne Stuart. Mr. Oldham was voted Chairman and Mrs. Stuart Secretary. A communication was read from Mr. Louis Strause reporting picnic tables he had built were taken from the Archery grounds. Mr. Ben Acuna volunteered to see about their return. The Chairman appointed two committees to better facilitate the work of the Commission: Beach Committee, Jerry McClellan, Ben Acuna, Dr. Glines; Trees and Parks Committee, Mrs. Pelt and Mrs. Stuart. This com- mittee will pass on permits for tree removal and recommend their findings to the City Council for final action. Discussion of clean-up of parkings was to be taken up with the Vol- unteer Fire Department by Mr. Oldham. Close co-operation with the Chamber of Commerce in regard to a tree planting program will be carried out at a later date. It was voted to have a whirlwind clean-up of the beaches August 29th. All service clubs and boys of the community will turn, out for the job. The Spanish-American group having planned a picnic for the child- ren of Carlsbad volunteered, through Mr. Acuna, to move their activities to the Beach Clean-up party, and would serve hot dogs and pop to those working. There was discussion of a walk under the Highway to the beach at the bridge, and it \i&,s decided to contact the Gas Company. Also talk of a swimming pool in Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Mr. McClellan was appointed to discuss the possibilities of such an undertaking with the manager of the Gas Company. The next meeting was set for August 25th, 1953, at ?:30 P. M. in City Hall.
