BEACH & TREE COMMISSION January 26 A special meeting of the Parks, Recreation, Beach and Tree Com- mission was held January 26, 1954, at ?:30 P. M. in City Hall. Present were Mr. Oldham, Mrs. Christiansen, Mrs. Pelt, Ben Acuna and Mrs. Stuart. Minutes of January 12th were read and approved. On'Biesday, January 16th, Mr. Oldham, Mr. McClellan, Mr. Acuna and Mr. Harry Bales measured and marked on curbing what they felt was the proper planting locations for the trees on Garf ield Street from Walnut south. Mrs. Nichols sent word her report would be ready for the next meeting. Mrs. N. H. Martin, Carlsbad Boulevard, sent in a report stating she had made a survey as follows: two opposed to Palm trees, three wish no trees because of allergy, and three are willing to plant at once. Mr. Joe Cockrill and Mr. Turner from Buena Vista Gardens came to talk with the Commission about the uniform planting of trees on 20 build- ing sites with 14 homes. Mr. Oldham offered to consult with them at a future time. A letter and clippings were read from Mr. and Mrs. George Parker stating their choice of trees as follows: (1) jacaranda, (2) catalpas, and (3) big leaf maple. Brazillian pepper, flowering acacia, and cork oak were also suggested, A letter was read from Mr. Nicklin of Helm's Bakery requesting the removal of a eucalyptus tree. He also appeared in person. After much discussion regarding the cutting of such a beautiful tree, a motion was made by Mrs. Felt and seconded by Mrs. Christiansen that they be al- lowed to remove the tree at their expense and that it be replaced with a new tree and that they trim the eucalyptus at the rear of the lot; motion carried. Mr. Nicklin also agreed to do some type of beautlfica- tion where tree is removed. It was found necessary to elect a vice chairman, due to a request from Mr. Oldham. Motion was made by Mrs. Stuart and seconded by Mr. Acuna, that Mrs. Felt be made vice chairman. Motion carried. Motion was made by Mrs. Christiansen and seconded by Mrs. Felt that the monthly meeting date be changed from the last Tuesday of the month to the last Thursday, hoping this new date will result in better attendance . - 1 - A letter was read from Leo Carrillo of the State Park Commission stating he would do all possible to protect the Carlsbad beaches. Mr. Oldham presented a map of Carlsbad which he had checked, showing 180 eucalyptus trees at least 50 feet tall. This only covered a portion of Carlsbad. Motion carried to adjourn.
