T 1954 The regular meeting of the Parks, Recreation, Beach and Tree Commis- sion was held June 24, 1954, in the Carlsbad City Hall at 7'30 P. H. The following members were present: Mrs. Felt, Chairman, Dr. Glines, Hrs. Christiansen, Jerry HoClellan and Vesta Stuart. Minutes of last two meet- ings read and approved. A letter was read from Willis H. Miller, Director of San Diego County Planning Commission, stating that they were compiling a master plan for beach development. He requested a plan from Carlsbad. This will enable them to get oil tideland money for the development of parks and beaches. A committee of three was appointed, consisting of Hrs. Felt, Dr. Glines, and Jerry l-icClellan. They are to meet with three persons from the Harbor Committee and work out such a plan and report to the City Council for their approval. Jerry McClellan reported he had contacted the Buena Vista District regarding their proposed tree planting and will meet with them at a later date. Also, he says the Highland Section are working on their plan and will report their progress later. It was suggested that another memo be sent to Mr. Sutton urging the City Council to offer ^5000.00 for the park site, as it was rumored that San Diego County Blight consider this price. Ben Acuna sent word that 3? residents of the Spanish-American district want trees, but are planning to put in sidewalks and will not want them un- til fall. Dr. Glines brought the Commission up to date on the life guard situ- ation, stating that George Meese is on duty and is trying out Irwin Hedstrom for an assistant. The City approved :;?440.00 for equipment and repairs, u?60.00 for toilets, ,?1,456.00 for salaries. The lifetower has been re- paired and a telephone has been installed. Mr. V/estree sent word by Mrs. Felt that the owner of the Carlsbad Hotel please ask the guard to control the children, as they disturb the guests who are resting on the beach. Mrs. Christiansen suggested that a sign be placed at the guard house stating that the public beach is south and that he talk with the children and explain that the Hotel Beach is private. - 1 - Several letters were read from various members of the Garden Club requesting everything possible be done to acquire the park site.
