RECREATION. b^ACH AND TREE COMMISSION August 26. 1954 The regular monthly meeting of the Commission was called to order by Chairman Felt at 7:40 p. m. Because of another meeting in progress at the City Hall, this Commission meeting was held in the Carlsbad Union School Of- fice. Members of the Commission present besides the Chairman were: Mr. Wes- tree, Dr. Glines, Mrs. Christiansen, Mrs. Stuart, and Mr. McClellan. Absent, Mrs. Garcia. Mrs. Stuart announced that she was unable to continue as secretary of the Commission, and Mr. McClellan was temporarily appointed to take the min- utes of the Commission meetings. Mrs. Christiansen presented a motion which was seconded by Dr. C-lines, that Mr. Vtestree be appointed Chairman of the Parks and Trees Subcommittee with Mrs. Stuart and Mr. McClellan serving on the committee, that a plot plan of the new park with suggested improvements be prepared; and publicity be se- cured; and the public invited to offer suggestions for the development of the park. Motion carried. There was considerable discussion regarding possible development of the new park including participation in the discussion by re- presentatives from the Junior Women's Club who were present. It was decided to schedule further discussion about the park at the next regular meeting on September 23rd. A motion was made by Mrs. Stuart, seconded by Mr. Westree, that the tree committee make a survey of the trees in the area to determine the most dan- gerous trees and to classify them in three priority groups as to the urgen- cy of trimming required; to prepare with, priority units specified, an invita- tion for bids; that the invitation be submitted to the City Council with the request that bids be secured and contract be awarded for the work, to the ex- tent that funds are available. Motion carried. Mrs. Christiansen moved and Dr. Glines seconded, that this Commission strongly urge that the City Council, at this time, consider acquiring prop- erty adjacent to the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, bordering the cove on the north side from Harrison Street to the freeway, as an ideal location for City beach and park. This action is urged before structures and other developments oc- cur in this particular area, because of the safety and protection to awimners in this area, afforded by the cove, and because of the very apparent adver- tising value to the community of such a development. Motion carried. Members of the Commission agreed to meet on August 31st at 11:15 a. ni. at the new park site to inspect the area, to proceed to the Chamber of Com- merce Lucheon, after which, members will inspect by water, the proposed har- bor area.
