B.bACH AND TREE COMMISSION September 23. 1954 The regular monthly meeting of the Parks, Recreation, Beach, and Tree Commission was called to order at 7:44 P. M., September 23rd, 1954 by Chairman Felt. Members of the Commission present besides the Chair- man were: Comm. Christiansen, Glines, Westree, and McClellan. Absent were: Comm. Stuart and Gastelum. The minutes of the August meeting were read and approved. Mr. Westree reported for the sub-committee on trees, advising that individual trees considered dangerous were charted on a master map. The most dangerous trees are believed to be those adjacent to the school and at the intersection of Grand and State Street. The Secretary was instruc- ted to address a memorandum to the City Council urging that uniform topping and shaping of the trees in these two areas be done as quickly as possible. Considerable discussion ensued about development of the new Park site and about the proposed master plan sketch as presented by the sub-commit- tee on parks. Representatives of the Junior Womans* Club were offered as a project the equipping of the proposed playground area. Dr. Glines moved and Mr. Westree seconded, that the plot plan as presented be recommended to the City Council for approval. Motion carried. Chairman Felt annoueed that several suggestions had been received regarding the naming of the new park. Those received were: Central Park, McClellan Park, Frazier Park, Shangri-La, and Friendship Park. It was decided to request publicity on the matter of naming the Park in order that further suggestions may be offeree by residents of Carlsbad. It was also suggested that Dr. Glines invite the school children to offer possible names for the new park. Mrs. Christiansen moved that since several young people donated their services this summer as lifeguards and assisted City Lifeguards on a voluntary basis, these young people be formally thanked by letter from this Commission, and Dr. Glines seconded the motion.
