HomeMy WebLinkAbout1955-07-07; Parks & Recreation Commission; MinutesMINUTES OF MEETING OF CARLSBAD PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION July 7, The meeting was called to order at 7:35 P.M. by Chairman Westree. Present besides the Chairman were Commissioners Stuart, Christiansen, Pelt, Nielsen and Mr, Robert Hardin, Fire Chief, who attended in an advisory capacity . The minutes were read and approved. No bills were presented for payment, Discussion was held regarding the budget for the coming year', Chairman Westree stated that he had contacted Mr. C. .A. Anthony, Public Works Director regarding said budget and had been informed that no commitments or expenditures can be made until the Budget Meeting which is scheduled for July 12, 1955 . Mr, Anthony also informed the committee that, due to an overloaded work schedule, his department will not be available for work at the Park at the present time, It was suggested by Mr, Robert Hardin that perhaps the Carlsbad Mutual Water Company might have old used 2" pipe which would be suitable for use in the installation of a sprinkler system at the park, Stuart moved that a letter be written to the Carlsbad Mutual Water Company asking if they have any used 2" pipe which would be available to the City for use at the park, Christiansen seconded the motion, AH ayes. Motion carried, It was reported that a neighboring family have been raising and lowering the Flag located at Holiday Park', Mrs. Pelt moved that a memorandum be sent to Mr. C. A. Anthony asking that the Park Custodian or an appointed City employee be responsible for the raising and lowering of the Flag, Also, that existing plantings be watered from the City owned main line until a sprinkling system can be installed, Nielson seconded the motion. All ayes. Motion carried, (1) Old business was discussed as follows t It was brought to the Commission's attention that the position vacated by Dr. Walter L. Glines had not been filled and such appointment would be made by the City Council. Mrs. Wayne Stuart stated that her term also expires this month. Discussion was held regarding the picnic planned for July 16th at Holiday Park in honor of the 3rd Anniversary of the City of Carlsbad. Fire Chief Robert H8.rdln stated that the Fire Department will take charge of the fire to burn the trash at the -Park for the picnic, but that the heat and smoke would be too intense to permit weiner roasting as previously suggested. Christiansen informed the Commission that approximately fourteen (l^) service organizations have been con- tacted for contributions of ^10.00 each which would provide for the weiners and lemonade to be served at the picnic. Each family will be requested to furnish their own picnic lunch. Tentative time has been set at ?:00 P.M. on Saturday July 16, 1955. Nielson moved that a letter be sent to Mr. Max Swald, City Clerk, asking that he contact the City Council with the recommendation the.t a Coordinator be appointed to take charge of arrangements for the food, dining accommodations and publicity for the scheduled picnic. Also, that the Parks and Recreation Commissioners are In accord with the plans for this celebration and will be glad to cooperate with the City Council in every way. Stuart seconded the motion. All ayes. Motion carried. Chairman Westree reported an inquiry from the Carlsbad Hotel regarding beach clean-up. Dr. Walter k, Glines was contacted by telephone regarding a beach clean-up campaign by the Spanish- American Group but no definite arrangements had been made. Stuart moved that a letter be sent to Mr. Herbert E. Nelson, City Manager, with carbon copy to Mr. C. A. Anthony, Public Works Director, stating that, since no money is immediately available (2) to this Commission, and the lack of time to organize a public beach clean-up, the Department of Public Works provide some facilities so that this problem may be taken care of before the summer season progresses, It was suggested that a memorandum be attached to the letter to the City Clerk recommending that Holiday Park be listed in the current Ocean side-Carlsbad City Directory along with other official departments.
