HomeMy WebLinkAbout1988-07-20; Senior Commission; MinutesSPECIAL MEETING SENIOR COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES JULY 20, 1988 The Special Meeting of the Senior Cornmission was called to order by Ch irman, Linwood Van at 1 :00 P.M., July 20, 1988. Members of the Senior Commission in attendance were: Linwood Van, Theresa Maggio, Peggy Savary and Dorrie Ritchie. Absent: Marion Cast. Carlsbad Senior Citizens' Association Board of Director's members present were: Peggy Savary, Pearl Johnson, Theresa Maggio, Phil Bunn and Richard Sica. Also attending: Sue Spickard, Senior Citizen Coordinator. The purpose of the meeting explained by Linwood Van was for the Senior Commission and the CSCA Board of Directors to discuss fundraising. Peggy Savary introduced board members. Sue Spickard distributed copies of the new Senior Center "Wish List" and explained that the City will allocate enough money to open the doors of the new Center, but would not include llfringees'l and that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss ways to raise money for the items on the Wish List. Discussion ensued regarding funds the CSCA has raised and the potential for those funds to be utilized in the new Center. piano and other Association equipment to the City. Many times the items are not Commissioner Ritchie agreed -2- r Sue Spickard mentioned that there were other small items not listed which would need to be purchased, such as silk plants, clocks, art, etc. In response to Peggy's question if basic furniture will be provided by the City, Sue affirmed that furniture is part of the budget, but explained that the architect has been instructed to consider first priorities in budget for kitchen and dining rooms, auditorium, then office. Commissioner Ritchie made some suggestions to have the Wish List printed and circulated, along with history of the Senior Center. Seena Trigas arrived at 1 :40; La Costa Ranch Company. Sue said no definite groundbreaking date will be known until construction bids, due 8/24/88, are in. She added that a City/School District meeting to discuss groundbreaking is scheduled for next week. Having a BBQ was the first option discussed. Seena suggested another option to raise funds was to have a dinner affair at the Olympic Resort. This would mean higher ticket prices which would possibly dissuade Seniors from attending. back with Seena with more details regarding the potential for a BBQ. thanked Seena and La Costa Ranch Company for their generous offer. rc Seena left the meeting at 2:08. Linwood said we should ask Rotary to consider the Senior Center as recipient of Octoberfest proceeds.
