HomeMy WebLinkAbout1988-09-01; Senior Commission; MinutesMINUTES Meeting of: SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION Time of Meeting: 1:15 p.m. Date of Meeting: September 1, 1988 Place of Meeting: Harding Community Center \tl' COMMISSIONERS ' CALL TO ORDER: Chairman Van mlled the Meeting to order at 1:15 p.m. ROLL CALL: Present - Chairman Van, Commissioners Maggio, Ritchie and Savary. Absent - None. Chairman Van announced that Commissioner Cast had resigned and a new Commissioner would be appointed. Others Present: Sue Spickard, Senior Citizen Coordimtor Claude Helton, Liaison, Housing & Redevelopment 3osie McCLoud, League of Women Voters Observer MATTERS FROM THE PUBLIC: There was no one present to speak before the Commission. Advisory Committee APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The Minutes of the Regular Meeting held August 4, 1988, were approved as presented. Fundra i si ng Sue Spickard announced that Cerico's would host a dinner on September 25, 1988, from 3:OO p.m. until 8:OO p.m., with all proceeds to go to the Senior Center. The - midmum domtion will be $5.00 for the dinner. Ms. Spickard said that volunteers are needed to sell tickets and to help with the serving of the dinner. Ms. Spickard announced that the golf tournament will be held September 24, 1988, and will be sponsored by Gerico's, with the proceeds going to the Senior Center. The green fees will be $25.00, with a dinner, prizes and fun for all. Senior Center Update Chairman Van announced the bid opening last Wednesday for construction of the Senior Center. The bids ranged from $3,025,000 to $3,886,900. awarded to Straub Construction, Inc. at the lowest bid. Council will award this bid at their September 6 mee ti ng . Chairman Van stated he thought it would be an award- winning type of building and it is hoped the Senior Center will be occupied next year. The contract will be Va n Ritchie Sa va ry Ma 991 0 \ MINUTES r.- .- September I, 1988 SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION Page 2 COMMISSIONERS ' Sue Spickard reminded everyone of the groundbreaking ceremony for the Senior Center on Friday, September 16, 1988, at 4:OO p.m. There will be a barbecue following the groundbreaking, with all members of the Senior Citizens Association admitted free. There will be a charge of $2.00 for everyone except children under the age of 12. Ms. Spickard again narned everyone to advise all seniors to avoid the construction site when work starts there, as it will be dangerous. Stagecoach Park Meetings Sue Spickard said she had been requested to have the Commission discuss holding regular meetings at Stagecoach Park. The consensus of the Commission was to hold meetings at Stagecaach Park on a semi-annual basis, with a good publicity program to advertise those two meeetings. Ms. Spickard stated she would try to arrange for a meeting there in February, 1989. Senior Citizen Coordimtor's Report Sue Spickard reported on August events, including eye screening, 55-Alive Mature Driving Class through AARP, trip to Lawry's, diabetic screening and deep-sea fishing trip. September activities include trying a course in needlecraft at Stagecoach Park September 16, 1988, free of charge; a dance at the Harding Auditorium September 15, 1988, with a live band and refreshments. The NBC Studio Tour is not sold out as yet, and a full bus will be needed. Chairman Van asked Ms. Spickard to call attention to the Carlsbad Parks and Recreation brochure where special thanks was given to the seniors who volunteer to help with senior programs.
