HomeMy WebLinkAbout1988-10-06; Senior Commission; Minutes, MINUTES Meeting of: SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION Time of Meeting: 1:15 p.m. Date of Meeting: October 6, 1988 Place of Meeting: Harding Community Center COMMISSIONERS CALL TO ORDER: Chairman Van called the Meetinp to order at 1:15 p.m. ROLL CALL: Present - Chairman Van, Commissioners Heard, Maggio, Ritchie and Savary. Absent - None. Chairman Van welcomed Commissioner George Heard, the new Commissioner, and announced that Commissioner Ritchie had been reappointed for a three-year term. Others Present: Sue Spickard, Senior Citizen Coordinator Josie McCLoud, League of Women Voters Observer MATTERS FROM THE PUBLIC: There was no one present to speak before the Commission. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The Minutes of the Regular Meeting held September 1, 1988, were approved as presented, Fundraising Sue Spickard announced that Cerico's Colt' Tournament and dinner raised -$3,182 for the Senior Center. She said that a printout "thank you" was made, with the seniors signing; there will be a "thank you" in the newsletter and an ad will be placed in the newsletter as a "thank you" to Cerico's. Ms. Spickard stated that a photograph album will be put together to present to Cerico's and she had written a formal "thank you1' letter to them. There was a discussion about any tips that were turned in and it was felt those should somehow have gone to Gerico's employees who gave of their time. suggestion was made that perhaps flowers or some token of appreciation could be sent to them. Ms. Spickard called attention to the draft giving information and statistics for the new Senior Center. Copies of these drafts were included in the packet. asked for Comnission discussion. The She Commissioner Ritchie asked for a copy of the floor plan to be included in the materials to be used by the Commissioners when they make presentations before organizations for fundraising for the new Center. The Commissioners were asked to coordinate their schedules with Ms. Spickard, so everyone will know which groups have been scheduled for talks. Chairman Van stated the Carlsbd Journal had published in their newspaper that the seniors wanted a mini-bus for the new Center. He stated that there would be a meeting of the Senior Center Committee on October 19, 1988, and Ms. Spickard will ask that the meeting convene at 8:00 or 8:30 a.m. Ms. Spickard will check with the City Manager's office to make certain that the School Dfstrict was thanked for supplying the food for the Dedication Ceremony barbecue. Chairman Van stated that the gift shop had not been finalized as yet, and if there is any change in those plans, that should be brought forth soon. Ms. Spickard stated that there will be color pallets available and floor maps of the gallery area for the Seniors to use and also for the artists to use in preparing their maquettes. The art finalists will have their work on display at the Volunteer Christmas Party, and there will be public comment on the pieces. selection will be made in January and sent on to City Council for final approval. Volunteer Christmas Party Sue Spickard stated the auditorium had been reserved for December 16, 1988, for the annual Christmas party, to be given by this Commission to honor all of the volunteers. The same caterer will be used and the entertainment will be by the drama aroup. Also, the audience will participate in Christmas carol singing. There will be a gift for each of the volunteers, and the social hour will start at 5:OO p.m. Ms. Spickard stated the food line will be handled differently this year, with the tables called up one at a time. volunteers will be different from the regular name tags, to identify the volunteers. The The name tags for the Correspondence Chairman Van called attention to the Mayor's letter, copy of which was contained in the packet, regarding the change in name for the Senior Citizen Commission. SENIOR CITIZEN COORDINATOR'S REPORT: Sue Spickard announced there will be a trip to Knott's Berry Farm: a fishing trip; an Over 55 Alive Mature Driving program and Spanish classes at St. Michael's Church starting October IO, 1988. A new exercise instructor has been obtained through Mira Costa College. The Stagecoach Park needlecraft class is going great, and Ms. Spickard added that those seniors need to be served in that area. Ms. Spickard said that some of the activities are being slowed down at this time, leading into the Holidays.
