Absent - Commissioner Savary. Others Present: Sue Spickard, Senior Citizen Coordinator MATTERS FROM THE Pumc There was no one present to speak before the Commission. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Tho Minutes of the Regular Meeting held November 3, 1988, were approved as presented. Appointment of Scribe Chairman Van announced Commissioner Maggio would be the Scribe for the coming year. Fundraisinq Sue Spickard stated that Commissioner Rltchie had suqqested a certificate be prjnted to oive to people who make donations to the new Senior Center. Ms. Spickard distributed copies of the certificates used by the City and suaqested havinq a sketch made of the new Senior Center for their cprtificate. Commfssion discussJon determined a parchment type of certfficate would be favored. to he placed in a folder showinq the Senior Center. Commjssion was to have both the Mayor and the Chairman of the Senior Ccimnlssjon siqn the certjficates. Ms. Splckard added that a brochure will be developed for the new Center. and a sketch of the Center would be needed for that. Ms. Splckard and Chairman Van attended a function at the La Costa Hotel on November 25. and the Senior Center was selected as a recipient of funds from the Tournament of Champions Charities. was received and that will be before this Commission at the next meeting. Chairman Van stated that Ms. Spickard had already sent a thank-you letter to the Tournament of Champions Charities. The consensus of the Ms. Spickard stated that $3,000 Van Heard Ritchin Maggio y '" Decemher I, 1988 SENIOR COMMISSION Page 2 COM M ISSlON ERS Fundraisina (Continued) Commissioner Ritchie reported on her fundraising presentation for the New Senior Center before the Evenini Rotary Club and stated it was very well. received and the: had indicated they would be happy to make a contribution for the amenities not covered in the baslc budget. She said it was important to take the model and the flooi plan to any presentation, as people are eager to see these. Commissioner Ritchle gave a schedule of meetings she wil: be attendinq, and Ms. Spickard then added that the Commissioners should always check with her when they makc arranqements for speaking, so she has a complete schedule. There is promise of a check from the Rotary Club in January, to be applied to the purchase of a wide-screen TV and VCR, and a tentative promise of more funds in 1989. Daniels Televislon will install cable TV in the new Center at no charge. Volunteer Christmas Partv Sue Splckard announced there wlll a cocktail hour; the Center model will he there and the art work for the Center will be on display. time will be sent through the food line. Certifjcates of appreclatlon will be qiven to Marlon Cast and Hiram Hoskin's wife. Rose. The drama club will present skits and there will be a stng-alonq of Christmas carols. Each voliinteer will receive a City of Carlsbad volunteer coffee mug in red or areen. Ms. Spickard stated she wanted the Commissioners to dtstribute the volunteer gifts. This year one tahle at a SenLor Center Update -- Chairman Van reported a tank was dtscovered underqround on the Senior Center site. and it had been filled with kerosene and had contamfnated the soil. That was removed and the site preparation has been completed. with the trenches for the foottng belng dug at this time. Sue Spickard reported that the maquettes from the three artfsts have heen recelved and will he on display tomorrow afternoon in the lounge here at the renter. They will be at the Christmas party and then will be on display at the main Library. Sue Spickard stated she has hren workina on the bond act application. which is due next Monday at 5:OO p.m. The City Councll approved applying for the bond act on November 22, 1988. MINUTES .- December 1, 1988 SENIOR COMMISSION Page 3 COMMISSIONERS - Senjor Center Update (Continued) Ms Snickard reported that after the ftrst of the vear. purchases of equipment for the new Center will be made Throuqh the hond act, Carlshad Is applyfnq for equipment for the auditorium. as this is the most multi-purpose room in the PacilJty. Senior Coordinator's Report Sue Spickard reported that the Center served 175 people Thanksgiving dinner by doing it in two shifts Ms. Spickard reported the Eye-Screening Program and the 55 Alive Program are qoino strong. Needlecraft Propram is still in need of an instructor. Ms. Spickard stated that Commissioner Heard is looking into a tax program at Staqecoach Park. The Stagecoach Ms. Spickard continued her report, stating the Association newsletter had survey reqardinq trips the Seniors would like to take. Those surveys are being returned in large numbers, and this will be a help in planning future trips. Ms. Spickard announced the Warblers will sing in the Auditorium on Xednesdav, December 7. 1988. from 1:OO p.m. to 2.30 p.m. Animal Park January 19. There will be a trip to the Mild Ms. Spickard stated she is workinq on the budgets and the Commission wfll review the facility rental sriqgestions, volunteers handbook. programs and brochure.
