SENIOR CENTER BARBECUE
Sue Spickard referred to the report to the Commission dated January 5,1993, which gave the background
of the project and the recommendation of staff. A copy of that report is part of the record. Crty Council
returned this item to the Senior Commission for further consideration with the recommendation that a
barbecue be constructed with a cost not to exceed $5,000.
Ms. Spickard stated that staff recommended that the Commission take no further action at this time and
use the money from the trust account to purchase a portable barbecue, if they wanted a barbecue at this
time.
Commissioner Chmiel stated she felt that it would not be advisable to spend such a large amount of
money for a barbecue at this time, as the barbecue would not be used that often. Commissioner Zink
concurred, adding that she would rather spend the money on something more useful.
Commissioner Whittaker stated that if the barbecue had been included when the building was built, it
would be a part of the amenities. He felt a separate barbecue does not fit here, and since none had been
required the last three years, he felt it was not necessary now. He recommended taking no action at this
time, including not purchasing a separate barbecue.

Commissioner MacEnery expressed concern about the safety of a portable barbecue. She stated that
she understood there is a portable barbecue that is available for City interdepartmental use.
Dave Bradstreet, Parks and Recreation Director, stated the Fire Department has a portable barbecue that
is available for City use.
Commissioner Chmiel stated that in the present economic times, she felt the seniors would be criticized
for spending a large amount of money on this project.
Commissioner Whittaker stated he would not object to borrowing or renting a barbecue if it could be done
properly and keeping the area safe and clean.
Chairman Heard thanked Dave Bradstreet, Parks and Recreation Director, and Keith Beveriy, the grant
writer, for all their work on this project.
ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Whittaker, the Senior Commission voted to abandon
the building of a barbecue at the Center and to use those funds for another
project. If the Senior Center needs to use a barbecue, the Commission
recommended borrowing one from the Fire' Department, as long as this can be
done safely and with no housekeeping problems with the area used at the Senior
Center.

Sue Spickard reported that the Commission held a workshop last year with a training program and

Commissioner Whittaker requested an outline from last year's workshop.
The Commission, by consensus, tentatively set Tuesday afternoon, January 19, 1993, as the date for the
workshop.
COMMllTEE REPORTS:

Sue Spickard gave the Suggestion Committee report, stating there were two suggestions, both of which
have been addressed previously. One suggestion was for hooks on the billiard tables, and that will be

need to work together.
