June 2, 1994 SENIOR COMMISSION Page 2 BILLIARDS: Commissioner Whittaker reported on a May 2, 1994, meeting of the Billiards Committee. The Committee discussed different types of tips for cues and decided to purchase a clamp, tip and glue kit from Olhausen. Also the Committee decided that Olhausen should be the company to recover and re-level the tables, since they installed them. The Cost for the recovering and re-leveling for each table is $200.00. The Senior Citizens’ Association has $400.00 available for the Senior Center to pay for the recovering of the tables. The Committee recommended the work be paid for out of the Senior Trust Fund, and that cost will be reimbursed by the Senior Citizens’ Association. ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Chmiel, the Senior Commission adopted the recommendations of the Billiards Committee for the work on the cues and tables. The recovering of the tables will be paid for out of the Senior Trust Fund and will be reimbursed by the Senior Citizens’ Association. AYES: Heard, Chmiel, West and Whittaker COMMITIEE REPORTS: Suaaestion Committee Commissioner Whittaker gave the report, with the following suggestions being presented: Suggestion: Plan a trip to the Wild Animal Park. Answer: In the past, the Zoo and Wild Animal Park would not offer group senior discounts. Staff will contact them to see what can be planned for this fall. Suggestion: Free food like veggies, fruit and bread--like they do in Northern California. Answer: The Senior Center does distribute veggies, etc., when they are brought in by local farmerslgardeners. The Center does not have the ability to store food items; therefore, would not recommend being a regular distribution site. Suggestion: Why not weight training? Answer: This was suggested previously, and it was not possible to place it in the schedule. However, since that time, staff has reconsidered this, and due to the liability involved, would not recommend such a class. Anyone interested in weight training could attend a local gym where trained professionals offer this type of instruction. Suggestion: Does not like present Bingo rules. Answer: The Tuesday afternoon Bingo game is sponsored by the Carlsbad Senior Citizens’ Association. The Center only provides the room--and the Association is responsible for the rules. It has been stated they are in the process of re- writing their rules, and this suggestion has been given to the members of the Board of Directors for their consideration. .' June 2, 1994 SENIOR COMMISSION Page 3 Surrrrestion Committee (Continued) Suggestion: Have C.C. (The Candy Man) sing for the seniors at lunch at least once a month. Answer: C.C. has agreed to sing at lunch on a monthly basis. Suggestion: Ban smoking within 20 feet of any entrance to the Center Answer: Smoking is not permitted inside the Senior Center, but to ban it within any distance of the outside could only be accomplished through a City Ordinance by the City Council. Nutrition Proiect Liaison Commissioner Chmiel reported on the congregate meals served in March, 3,312; average donation $1.67; April, 2,917, average donation $1.58. The total home meals delivered in March, 994; April 838, average donation $2.03 for both months. The current balance of funds raised through Project Council activities is $1,902.71. These funds are raised from dances, craft and bake sales, etc. Commissioner Chmiel listed the special events held in March and April, and the business conducted at the meetings. SENIOR COORDINATORS REPORT: Sue Spickard reported the fundraising brochure will be ready for the Commission's review at the next Commission meeting. She stated that May was 'Older Americans Month', and she detailed the new ventures and events that marked the month, including a 'Cinco de Mayo' luncheon, where over 225 seniors were served. Ms. Spickard commented that the AAA made their unannounced visit for review of the Nutrition Program for the Cinco de Mayo luncheon, and gave the Center an excellent report. They interviewed several of the seniors and were told that this Center is the best Senior Center anywhere and how much they all enjoy being able to come here. Ms. Spickard stated that the volunteers at the Center make all the events more successful, and she expressed her appreciation to them. Ms. Spickard told of the Senior Showcase held at the Center, with 26 vendors participating. The Blade Newspaper published an article about the Showcase, and she stated she had copies for anyone desiring to read the article. She detailed the other events held during May to honor older Americans. The 1994 tax assistant program through this Center prepared over 700 tax forms and provided over 1,000 hours of service.
