HomeMy WebLinkAbout1999-05-06; Senior Commission; MinutesMINUTES - MEETING HAVE: SENIOR COMMISSION DATE OF MEETING: TIME OF MEETING: 1:15 p.m. PLACE OF MEETING: MAY 6, 1999 (Regular Meeting) CARLSBAD SENIOR CENTER CALL TO ORDER: Commissioner Whittaker called the Meeting to order at I :I 5 p.m. ROLL CALL was taken by Sue Spickard, as follows: Present: Absent: Commissioner Zink Commissioners Chmiel, Serrin, West and Whittaker. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE was led by Chairperson Whittaker. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: ACTION: On motion by Chairman Whittaker, Minutes of the Regular Meeting held April 1 ,I 999, were unanimously approved as presented. - CONSENT CALENDAR Action On motion by Commissioner Chmiel, Commission unanimously affirmed acceptance of the Consent Calendar calling attention to the increase in Area Agency on Aging funding. SENIOR CENTER IOTH ANNIVERSARY PARTY On motion made by Commissioner, Serrin and second by Chairman Whittaker, Chmiel, will chair a committee to plan the Senior Center Anniversary party. Commission suggested to have catered hors doeuvres, and live music for the anniversary party. Sue will investigate the potential for making a video presentation regarding the history of the Senior Center. MEMORIAL GARDEN Commission will seek an architect to provide a recommendation on a preliminary plan for the Memorial Garden. An idea of starting a fund for people who would like to contribute to the memorial fund was discussed. Commissioner Serrin suggested to make a plaque honoring the contribution of all of the commissioners whom have contributed their time and energy to the center. Page 2 SENIOR COMMISSION MAY 6,1999 - Minutes Volunteer Celebration Commission will continue discussing what criteria to use in determining who is invited to the Volunteer Celebrations. Commission suggestion was made to find out haw much time volunteers provide to the many programs at the Center. Chairperson’s Rep ort. - Suggested we try to get the City involved in considering another Senior Center. Statistics report, over 23% of the population in Carlsbad are seniors. Chairperson Whittaker believes we should try to speak out as much as possible to make the City aware of the need for a new center or add on to the existing Senior Citizens building. ITEMS FOR NEXT AGENDA - June 3,1999 0 Senior Center 1 Oth Anniversary Party Memorial Garden for Courtyard 0 Volunteer Celebration Chairperson, Whittaker and the other commissioner’s congratulated Sue Spickard on her new job title, Senior Services Manager.
