Then to make the mix even more exciting we added the 10th Anniversary Celebration. Thanksgiving in the diningroom was attended by over 226 Seniors. And, once again, Marsha Lipton and her elves prepared and delivered meals to homebound seniors, and that included people who would be alone on Thanksgiving and/or Christmas Day. The 10th Anniversary was a bit of a let down, as far as the number of those who attended. The committee (Ruth Shuhart, Al Roller, Joan Smith, Rita Stasio, and Commissioner Izma Chmiel) worked tirelessly to make the Center shine and they were successful. We worked very hard to attempt to entice the "Baby Boomers" and the working Senior to come look us over. Unfortunately that didn't happen. Although the attendance was lower than hoped, those who did attend were impressed. Many THANKS goes out to the committee and the staff - each put in a GREAT effort for the event. Terry Talbot, Kitchen Assistant, was nominated and selected as the Part Time Employee of the Year representing the Senior Division at the annual Parks & Recreation Commission Holiday Celebration. She is truly deserving!!! She will soon be 85 years young and puts in as many hours as any of her juniors who would have a hard time keeping up with her. "Congratulations Terry!" Ernest Porter was also nominated for an award. Although Ernest was not selected to receive an award, we at the Senior Center think he should be commended for his "CAN DO" attitude and his willingness to always pitch in and go the extra ten miles. You're the BEST Ernest!!! We are once again fully staffed. For the first time we have a lady van driver. Pat Piper is on board and she came with all the necessary licenses. Richard Lindstrom is our newest recruit for facility attendant. The spirit of the holidays was in abundance at the Center this year with many celebrations and holiday entertainment. The Carlsbad High School Chamber Singers roamed the hallways and the rooms filling them with good cheer. After the singing stopped the singers made an effort to visit with the many Seniors present. The Carlsbad Choraleers also filled the auditorium with joyful sounds. The monthly movies surprisingly continue to be a popular draw. In December we showed "A Christmas Story" to the delight of those in attendance. The Nutrition Project Council had a holiday drawing. The net profit was $231.75. The funds are primarily utilized to support special events in the diningroom. Christmas and New Years in the diningroom brought in many guests. Special meals were served each of those days. The New Year Celebration was particularly special with the Jerry Michelsen Trio entertaining, and then a toast with sparking cider, horns, hats and whistles. January promises to be an active month. A Senior Olympian will introduce the seniors to low-impact aerobics on the 5th; a Ph.D. will explain the "Philosophy of Joy" on the 19th; and seniors will have a chance to learn how to become more organized on the 27th. I have successfully completed the Regional Management Academy training. Although I enjoyed the sessions, I am looking forward to being able to spend more time at the Senior Center. Sue Schultz Spickard attach: Senior Safari update SENIOR SAFARI UPDATE November and December were filled with numerous holiday activities. Saturday, November 6 we traveled to the LaJolla Playhouse for a theatre performance of "Sweet Bird of Youth." Wednesday, November 17 we safaried to the Wild Animal Park to enjoy the acclaimed Mum Festival and to see the new animals at the Park. A morning tour of Knorr Candle Factory, lunch and shopping at Flower Hill Mall and a tour of the new Carlsbad Library was our schedule on November 30. Then we settled into the splendors of the Four Seasons Aviara for high-tea to top off our wonderful day. The Glory of Christmas on Saturday, December 4 was absolutely terrific. We had a morning tour of the cathedral by a very knowledgeable docent followed by lunch at the Home Buffet. Our late afternoon performance was spectacular and the seating was great. We dressed up for the day of December 9 and treated to a tour of the Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel. Our lunch, at the hotel, was to 'die' for ..... shopping in Laguna followed (for some of the more 'trendy' items.) A brief stop at Roger's Gardens and the wonderful holiday lights was our afternoon treat. The Radio City Rockette's performed their own holiday performance at the Universal Amphitheater in Hollywood on December 15 ....... what a show! ! ! ! ! ! December 20, our final venture for the '99 season. . .was an especially great one. Newport Beach and the annual Holiday Boat Parade, following dinner was absolutely superb. We were part of the parade and what a way to see the boats! . ................ it was a wonderful, wonderful year, filled with surprises and many smiling faces.
