MANAGERS REPORT
The past two months have been extremely busy. A great deal of my efforts has been
focused on budget preparation for Fiscal Years 2000 -2001 and 2001 - 2002. In
addition, much time has also been dedicated to Performance Measures, Goal setting, and
development of the Recreation Strategic Plan.
We are thrilled to announce that beginning April 3, Culinary Concepts is the new caterer
for our lunch program. Although it has only been a couple of days, the comments are
overwhelmingly positive. There are a few adjustments that need to be made, but we are
thrilled for our seniors. We will be having a taste testing party in the near future.
Dining room and Auditorium floors are scheduled to be replaced. It is anticipated that we
will use the Auditorium for the lunch room while the dining room floor is being installed.
This work is scheduled July 22 through September 11.
Overall comments received regarding the Volunteer Celebration have been very positive.
Hoping that the event can be held in Carlsbad next year, the City has put additional
money into the Center budget.
For your review, I have attached an update that staff has provided on the programs that
they oversee.

Tri
On February 3rd we 'sailed' to the Queen Mary in Long Beach for a tour of the ship and to see some of the
new renovations being done. A special luncheon was prepared for us and served on the Promenade Deck.
After lunch we were treated to a viewing of the Romanov Dynasty Russian exhibit on tour in the US. This
was a very special exhibit and we all ooohed and aaaahed over the jewels!
One of the 'bestest' tours we have done has been on February 10th as we toured some of the new retirement
communities in Carlsbad. Carlsbad By The Sea, The Villas, Marriott's Brighton Gardens and Sunrise were
in store for us during this interesting day. This tour was so popular that we had 65 on the waiting list and
will be repeating again in July and then again in the fall to facilitate our waiting list seniors.
"Aida", a special evening performance was on our schedule for February 15th. This ever popular opera was
well received by all of the seniors who attended.
The Getty Museum on February 22nd was all it promises to be. This (our second venture) trip is an
experience for seniors who love the arts. We had arranged a box lunch for the attendees and the weather
cooperated so we could lunch on the terrace overlooking the beautiful gardens.
We have been sooo lucky with the weather....and, again, we lucked out on March 2nd as we boarded our
bus to Bates Nut Farm. After a tour of the packing assembly plant, we had a box lunch at the Farm! Then,
we traveled to Bell Gardens and attended a short seminar on the Gardens. We were all treated to a hayride,
a train ride around the property and then coffee'd, had brownies and strawberries!!! Now, that is a day on
the Farm.
On Thursday evening, March 9 we drove to San Diego and the Sports Arena for an evening show of Disney
on Ice. What a thrill for all of us. When Disney does a production they do go all the way! Complete with
beautiful costumes, wonderful sets and terrific skating we were thoroughly entertained for the evening.
"The Sound of Music" was our special theatrical production for the month. With Richard Chamberlain and
a wonderful cast surrounding him, this was one of the best shows we have seen at the Civic Theatre. We
attended a Saturday matinee performance on March 11 and were certainly thrilled to be a spectator for this
show.
March 16th we were surrounded by flowers, cactus, and spring blooms as we drove to Encinitas for a full
day of enjoying the beautiful horticulture surrounding our area. The Cactus King Nursery (we even
sampled a special cactus drink), Weidner's Gardens (Evelyn demonstrated the knack of doing hanging
baskets) as we lunched among the begonias, and, then the Orchid Plant Farm for a very informative tour.
Palm Springs Follies (first trip) is scheduled for March 24. As usual, this trip is so popular we scheduled a
second for May. Lunch will be served at the Spa Casino & Resort Hotel and a full afternoon of great
entertainment geared for the 'young at heart!'
Three days/2 nites in Laughlin March 27th departure. This trip promises to be fun-fun-fun. Riverside
Hotel & Casino, two breakfast buffets and one dinner buffet and theatre tickets to see Roger Whitaker in
concert now that's fun!
On April 2nd we will attend a Sunday matinee at the North Coast Repertory Theatre to see "An American
Daughter". Coffee and cookies will be served prior to the performance.
A Nature Day in Carlsbad is scheduled for April 6th. Carlsbad's fish hatchery, oyster farm, Buena Vista
Lagoon and a decent tour by the Audubon Society should compliment a full day.
A day in Malibu, and a wonderful day is scheduled for April 11th. A tour of the museum, lunch at the
Paradise Cove and a guided tour of the Barbra Streisand Conservancy with tea and scones in the gardens.
April 20th, Santa Anita race track and a bus full of seniors from Carlsbad....watch out, we might just
break the bank (or the track).
\
"A Chorus Line" at the Welk Resort is our pleasurable day scheduled for April 27.

CARLSBAD SENIOR CENTER
As expected, the free income tax assistance sponsored by AARP is quite
popular, with the available appointments rapidly disappearing. A group of
dedicated volunteers work hard each Tuesday and Thursday to handle the tax
needs of our seniors.
An audiologist from the Carlsbad Hearing Aid Center now volunteers every other
month to check and clean hearing aids. Nearly all of the appointments scheduled
on February 17 were taken so it is fast becoming a popular program!
The Senior Services Team from Aging and Independent Services is now
scheduled at the Senior Center twice a month to speak with older adults about
issues ranging from coping with age-related limitations, to a medical crisis, to
knowledge of elder abuse. Most of the appointments for the first session were
filled and the Center is excited about the continuing presence of the Team!
The walls of the hallway gallery at the Center have been adorned with the
paintings of artist Mary Taglieri since February 15 and the seniors are excited
about their beauty and serenity. A "Meet the Artist" seminar was conducted on
the 24th and it was well attended and many questions were asked. This may be an
ongoing series, with different artists represented here at the Center.
A big hit with the seniors was a "Gentle Yoga" class conducted on the 28th and
over 35 people showed up! This one class was so anticipated and requested by
the seniors that we are working on it becoming a weekly class. The comments
from the participants were all positive and encouraging!
March promises to be exciting, with: the League of Women Voters will offer the
pros and con of the issues for the upcoming March 7 primary on the 2nd; Dr.
Theresa Benjamin will present a follow-up to her popular "Philosophy of Joy"
seminar on the 8th; a video tour of "Small Ship Cruising" on the 23rd; and a retired
Oceanside police officer will address the seniors on the 29th about road rage.

CARLSBAD SENIOR CENTER
The League of Women Voters addressed a huge crowd of seniors on March 2
about the issues in the March 7 primary election; two representatives presented
the pros and cons for all propositions on the ballot. Many in the audience
commented that they thought it was a great service the Center provided!
Dr. Theresa Benjamin introduced the "Loving Resolution Process" on March 8.
The crowd was thoroughly interested in the topic and has requested that we have
Dr. Benjamin back in May!
A large audience of seniors went through the "Small Ship Cruising Experience"
on March 23. Anny Wright from Ace of Travel presented a video show featuring
smaller luxury liners and the breathtaking views available from a closer
vantagepoint. The crowd loved every minute of it and requested more programs
like this. Prizes were given and refreshments provided. A big hit!
A retired Oceanside police officer presented a talk on Road Rage on March 31.
He offered slides and a video outlining what to do and not to do if confronted by a
road rage situation. In short, don't give the enraged person the satisfaction of
you reacting...ignore them. All in attendance thought that Ken Cowing did a
masterful job in educating them about this frightful new phenomenon.
April promises to be exciting, with: a retired UCSD professor and well-known
genealogist Ernie Mort will guide you in searching for your family tree on the 6th;
a Friendship Tea where the ladies are encouraged to wear hat and gloves will
feature homemade finger sandwiches and scones on the 12th; the executive
director of Hospice of the North Coast will talk about home hospice care on the
20th; and Dr. Kathleen Novak will explain the philosophy behind "wholistic" health
care on the 25th.

RE: Dining Room Special Events
FEBRUARY:
V Valentine's Day was a delight for Congregate as well as Home Meals. Our
holiday meal was served on 2/1 1 as the Center was closed on 2/14! The meal was
extremely well received and complemented by both sets of diners. George Maloney
was our piano player. The prelude to dinner was a cranberry juice spritzer cocktail,
candies at each place setting, Chicken Oscar entree complete with asparagus and
krab meat, and we also added strawberry ice cream to make the meal more special.
Home meal recipients received Valentine's candy along with the complete meal.
A good time was had by all 1 66 diners although there had been 1 75 rsvp's!
The second highest attendance day for February was the 29th at 153 for a big
favorite, short ribs.
MARCH:
March 7th , Tuesday, was a wonderfully large crowd of 160 for our oven fried
chicken and then bingo.
St. Patrick's Day: We had a full house (172) for this special event. It included
near-beer, snack mix, the traditional corned beef meal and a new dessert called
Creme de Menthe Cake. We had Vista make the cake and we added the chocolate
and the creme de menthe whipped topping. Dick Stern's Headliner Irish Duo
performed and were loved by the crowd! Our diners were extremely complimentary
to staff and volunteers.
March 21st: The City Council agenda included the Nutrition Program contract.
Purchasing brought this to the Council recommending a vendor change due to long
term, ongoing problems with Vista's food service. The new contract date will be
effective 4/1/00 and is being awarded to Culinary Concepts of San Diego. To
ensure best coverage of this change, we were able to submit a special write-up for
the Parks & Recreation magazine. We plan to actively pursue "new" seniors to our
meal program with an aggressive marketing/advertising campaign. The new caterer
has instituted an incentive program for their employees to volunteer in conjunction
with our meal program. Additionally, Manfred, the headchef, has offered to do
cooking/food programs on a bi-monthly basis at our Center.
March 29th in the dining room will be special because of a donation from Brighton
Gardens. Our dessert will be made to order old-fashioned ice cream sundaes or
root beer floats. The staff will take orders by table, desserts will be prepared and
then delivered to each table.
APRIL:
We presently have our holiday meal scheduled for April 27th as Good Friday is the
28th. With our new caterer, I plan to sneak-in at least 2 extra special events to help
lift our numbers.
March 29th: Brighton Gardens sponsored an old-fashioned Hot Fudge Ice Cream
Sundae dessert in the DR. We informed our patrons that the scheduled dessert
would be served but immediately following completion of meal service our
sponsor would prepare and serve sundaes to each table.
We did a flyer to promote this event which worked. We had 166 diners!
Our diners were very pleased and many stopped to tell staff, volunteers and
myself what a great lunch and party it was.
