ADJOURNMENT By proper motion, the Regular Meeting of August 3, 2000 was adjourned at 2:10 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Kris Westland Secretary TO: SENIOR COMMISSIONERS FROM: Senior Services Manager MANAGERS REPORT It seems that for the last several months much of our energy has been focused on repairs due to the "flood". Repairs are for the most part complete. The offices got a new paint job, new carpeting and new blinds are on order. The lounge got new carpeting and lighter wall covering. Even the Billiards Room got new carpeting. We were very lucky that, for the most part, none of our equipment was damaged. However, we cannot say that for the office furnishings. The City and the insurance company are still negotiating what is to be replaced, or repaired. If furnishings are to be replaced, we want to make certain that they match the remaining furniture. We still have many boxes to go through - but the "flood" provided us the incentive to eliminate lots of old paperwork. Repairs to the Auditorium are underway. Along with replacing the floor, wall coverings will be replaced, a new paint job, P.A. system upgrades, and basic fluff and polish will take place. It is anticipated that these efforts will take about 6 weeks. In the mean time, we have transferred many of our regularly scheduled programs to other facilities in the City. Many THANKS goes to Gian Laurel from the Recreation Division, for making room for our programs. The display case in the hallway has become a fascinating display of the many collectibles, crafts, and talents of the seniors who frequent the Center. We encourage anyone who would like to share something they have made, cherish, or collect to sign up to display their wares for a month. In past years, members of the Carlsbad/Oceanside Art League have always done the display of Art in the hallway. For years Hazel Whittaker and then Mary Watkins coordinated the displays. Hazel and Mary both advised me many times that it was extremely difficult to get artists. We have not been successful in recruiting another volunteer to help with the display. For the past several months Carlsbad Resident Stephanie Williams, an Artist representative and broker has been extremely helpful in getting Artists to display their work here. Stephanie makes every attempt to change the type of art that is displayed each month from traditional to abstract, from oils to photos. Once the artist's work has been displayed, we set up a program to "Meet the Artist1. The artist discusses technique training, etc. These have proven to be very successful. The computer lab continues to be an extremely active area of interests. Along with the activity comes many challenges from recruiting volunteers, instructors, planning classes, on to the DSL line and internet connections. Patience on everyone's part is a must! Much to our dismay, the new caterer has not yet tempted the taste buds of the droves of new seniors we had hoped for. Unfortunately some "regular " participants have gone to other sites as they prefer the food cooked in Vista. After over 15 years of serving the same food from Vista, we felt it was time for a change. We are glad that those who prefer Vistas cuisine can go and get the nourishment at other North County sites. I support change and am confident that once this difficult transition for everyone works out the bugs, that we will see our count go up. Change with this clientele can be very difficult. After speaking with a few of our daily diners, they have expressed that Vista provided more institutional food and now we are receiving more restaurant style meals. We remain optimistic that our new menu choices will encourage new seniors to visit our Center. Since we sponsored the Countywide Nutrition Project Council meeting, we have received several calls inquiring about the new caterer. July brought about our Annual Ice Cream Social. It was a beautiful day in Magee Park. Over 200 seniors enjoyed the good old fashion ice cream at good old fashion prices. The Rumble Seat Rascals provided entertainment. Many THANKS to PacifiCare of California for their sponsorship of this event, and THANKS to the many volunteers who work tirelessly scooping, pouring, cleaning and much more to make sure that the event goes off without a hitch. One of the most touching, inspirational speakers the Senior Center has presented spoke of her experiences during the Holocaust. Judy Urman addressed a large audience, share memories and memorabilia, some of which were documents issued by Adolf Hitler. This was an unforgettable seminar. Seniors took a cruise through Canada, New England, and Singapore thanks to Annie Wright from Ace of Travel. Annie's presentations are always a favorite. Not only are her videos breathtaking - the refreshments and prizes are a high point as well. Upcoming in August is a presentation by the author of the best selling book entitled, "She Never Said Goodbye," chronicling his wife's descent into Alzheimer's disease. Rather than constantly advise you of the success of the Senior Safari Escorted Travel Program, we have enclosed a flier highlighting the many upcoming trips.
